That is my list of best to worst in my own personal opinion after years of being a massive View Askewniverse fan and following most of his characters so closely. The top three have deep, personal and often emotional meaning to me because of when they first showed up in the public consciousness as well as their script content. CLERKS premiered at a critical juncture in my life around age 20 when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my young life and whether I should try working a regular job or go to college full-time. CHASING AMY's relationship dialogue hits home hard with me because of people and issues I dealt with in the mid-to-late 90s and feelings I had for people that couldn't be reciprocated. And CLERKS 2 hits home for me now that I'm in my early-to-mid 30s and full of angst about where I've come so far and if it is enough for me...if I feel like I've accomplished anything or I'm just wasting time.

For the record, JERSEY GIRL isn't a bad film in terms of heart, intent and overall comparative quality. It is just the worst/my least favorite Smith movie to date because of numerous reasons, not the least of which is it coming hard on the heels of the other Affleck/J. Lo opus GIGLI which poisoned how audiences would see their next individual or even joint projects. Plus, it doesn't exist in the established "View Askewniverse" of New Jersey-based characters(Dante, Randal, Jay, Silent Bob, et. al.)that populate all but two of the Smith films produced so far.

And it's also too mainstream, "safe" and corporate in feel for one of his movies. A film made by the numbers...for the numbers. And it flopped appropriately.

3. Dogma: funny and good "action" story
4. Mallrats: amusing
5. Chasing Amy: I don't like the serious final act but I appreciate it
6. Clerks 2: nothing wrong with it but nothing classic either
7. Zack and Miri: very funny in places
8. Jersey Girl: absolutely no redeeming values whatsoever

Switch Clerks with Clerks II and Mallrats with Jay&SB and you have my list. I also agree with your comments about Jersey Girl, though it gets points for killing off J-Lo in the first 10 minutes.

SNOOTCH-TO-THA-MOTHERFUCKIN'-NOOTCH!

So, you don't like it because other people are idiots and treat it unfairly?

Anyway...

Chasing Amy
Clerks
Dogma
Mallrats
Zack & Miri Make a Porno
Clerks 2
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
Jersey Girl

Jersey Girl is on the bottom not because it's a bad movie, which it's not, but because it is the least rewatchable.

Clerks
Clerks 2
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
Dogma
Chasing Amy
Mallrats
Jersey Girl
Zack and Miri Make a Porno

They're all enjoyable, but 'Zack and Miri' was fairly disappointing for me. 'Jersey Girl' is sweet but I agree that it's not really something I have to see again.

Clerks
Chasing Amy
Dogma

And then really, I don't have a preference for the rest of the films. In some cases, I probably get more enjoyment out of the SModcasts that he's done.

Speaking of which, on the latest episode of SModcast he reflects on his old films - brought on by the recent film festival thing he hosted in Toronto a couple of weeks ago.

1. Clerks 2 is the best movie Kevin Smith ever made.

2. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is the funniest comedy he ever made.

3. Chasing Amy is relatively solid despite some very odd plot twists.

4. Zack and Miri Make a Porno is unremarkable.

5. Clerks. Despite being the one that started it all, a cult favorite, having several memorable characters, and a neat cross between 'a day in the life' style art film and a slacker movie, it isn't very good.

6. Dogma
is a horrible mess that needed several extra drafts and much better jokes.

Never saw Mallrats or Jersey Girl, but I may have to, just out of a sense of loyalty.

Of the ones I've seen:

1. Clerks 2 (I agree...it's his best film)
2. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (Pretty damned close to Clerks 2 for me)
3. Mallrats
4. Clerks
5. Chasing Amy
6. An Evening With Kevin Smith (while technically not a "film", I still enjoyed it. His recollections are funny. It's worth seeing just for the early behind the scenes nonsense behind Superman Returns)
7. Dogma

Jersey Girl just didn't look that interesting to me and I haven't seen the new one...but I'll rent it when it comes out on video.

No, I dislike JERSEY GIRL for the most part because it is a by-the-numbers boring romantic comedy done by a man who could have done so much better had he been allowed to show more flair and flexibility. But the movie was greenlighted as Smith's first "serious studio project" and as such it just fell flaccid. Affleck and Tyler were serviceable. As was George Carlin as the grandpa character. But it was a rote film test-marketed and aimed at a mass audience. Shit Smith isn't good at.

It's decent. The worst(IMHO)of the "View Askewniverse" films to date. Messier and much less focused than the rest. But Jason Lee's Brodie Bruce is a delight and Michael Rooker as Shannen Doherty's father is hilarious. The "stinky palm" stuff is funny to a point.

I love 1-5, Dogma is good but drags a bit, ZAMMAP was pretty good but the overall ending was lame, and I don't dislike JG, it's a nice little film but not on the level of the others

3--Clerks II
4--Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

I haven't seen his latest film. The first two listed are his best. The second two are entertaining. The last three I could go either way on. Jersey Girl is last because it's little more than a stupid, sentimental romantic comedy. If it didn't have George Carlin in it, it would be a total wash.

Haven't seen Zack and Miri yet...

I'm surprised to see Clerks 2 ranked so highly by so many. I don't have anything against it but what about it puts it above his other efforts? It just felt a little 'just there' to me, nothing particularly hilarious or interesting...
