Rambo 5 Goes Sci-Fi, 'Rambo V: The Savage Hunt'

Nu Image/Millennium Films officially announced a greenlight for Rambo’s fifth mission, with Sylvester Stallone signed on to return to star and also direct.
Sly now confirms to AICN that the storyline is much different than what the trades had reported. Rambo will not be returning to the United States, and the story will instead be set in the Pacific Northwest.

The story involves a secret U.S. military installation where they are doing experiments to create “brilliantly instinctual killer soldiers that have no qualms about taking life.” And when things go wrong, Rambo is brought in with a Black Ops squad to hunt, capture and kill these chemically engineered creations. So basically, Rambo will be the hunter instead of the hunted.
It sounds like a little Universal Soldier (1992) & Soldier (1998/I).

production on Rambo 5 will start in the spring.

Stallone still plans on making this movie, just not as a Rambo sequel.

Although the studio that made the last Rambo isn't exactly a great movie factory, and there are rumblings that they want to make more Rambo movies with or without Stallone.

Damn. With a title like that, I was expecting Rambo vs Predator. Now that I'd pay to see.

^ I remember when I first saw a trailer for Predator, it was in Spain and in Spanish. I thought it was a sequel to Commando & wondered why they'd gone sci-fi.

IIRC, this-now aborted project was based on a book which Sly had bought the rights to some time ago but couldn't get greenlit. After Rambo IV, the studio said they'd let him make it if he retooled it as Rambo V. He was going to do so but then a fan backlash caused him to reconsider. Wisely, IMHO.

He has more or less said that there won't be a Rambo V but there was talk of the studio doing one without him. A Sly-less Rambo seems totally pointless to me, but then again, they're making a Mad Max IV without Mel Gibson, so what do I know?
