R There Useful Parts That U Can Harvest From Big Rear Projection TV?

My sister is getting rid of her dinosaur of a TV - a huge Mitsubishi rear projection TV (the TV still works, but the red color is off and the TV gives you a headache if you watch it). Anywho, I was wondering if there are any interesting or valuable parts that can be salvaged from it before she throws it away. I know that you can take out and use the huge fresnel lense to do things like use solar power to cook meals. Anyone know of any other parts that should be harvested? Is it safe to take the TV apart or is there anything hazardous that we need to beware of?

Here's a pic of her TV model:

Nice to see someone else with a beast, we have a giant Apex in the basement that I use. It will be getting donated this spring.

There are potential hazards in there to be aware of. Namely resistors and such in there that can hold pants-shittingly high levels of electricity in them even when the TV is off and unplugged! This was largely true for CRT TVs and monitors and I suspect there's similar dangerous in these types of TVs too. Opening anything electronic carries very, very high levels of danger if you don't know what you are doing. Touching the wrong thing can give you a lethal jolt of electricity, again, even when the set is off and unplugged.

The only thing I can think that'd be "valuable" in it would be the bulbs for the projector which would be valuable to people with that same TV, or a TV the bulbs can work in for when their bulbs go out. Maybe the frame or mechanical bits for the bulbs to align them and such. Other than that, there's not much I think that'd be useful. The bulbs and rack should be easy get to and remove without having to worry about hurting yourself on any of the electrical components but I'm not sure "valuable" is a good word there. They're "worth money".... probably. Just not sure it'd be worth the effort.

Rather than throw it away I'd take to to a second-hand store/Goodwill and simply donate it. The Goodwill will then take care of it/decide if they can resell it. Better option than throwing it away. In lieu of either of that I'd take to an electronics store, they might be able to harvest anything in it of use or at least make sure it's disposed of properly, safely and in a manner that won't impact the environment.

Don't take it apart or throw it away. Buy the new TV from a store that will haul your old one away and recycle it for you. Many such stores will do that. For a fee, but they'll do it.

Or, failing that, just look into ways to donate it to a place that will recycle it for you.

Yeah, I thought there were probably some dangerous parts inside of it. I doubt anyone would buy this old dinosaur (specially since it needs repairs), so we were gonna throw it out this weekend 'cause our city is having a hazardous waste & electronics disposal day. But first I really wanna get the fresnel lense out of the TV! I think that it would be neat to have!

Okay, if there's a hazardous materials/electronics disposal day then it's good to use that as opposed to just putting it on the curb and letting it get tossed in the truck. (Or, I guess, taken.)
