Attention toy fans!

“Our collector toy partner since the ’90s, Playmates, is onboard as the Prodigy master toy partner and will be creating vehicles, action figures, playsets and role play products for the next generation of fans. We’re also in talks with gaming partners as the level of action, adventure and trips to new worlds lends itself so well to game play. And of course, we’re looking forward to translating the vivid, beautiful character art and imagery from the show into apparel, accessories and home products. But this is just the beginning – we’re pursuing all categories and aisles as we know the opportunity to tap into an unmet demand among kid fans is huge.”

not just prodigy, Lower decks, Disco, etc. merchindising has kind of not been star treks' thing..
Historically it has not done well enough to justify more of an expansion. Extremely niche, small footprint, not worth the cost. Now, with Playmates stepping back up that might change, but even with ST 09's good saturation some stores had lingering product. The numbers didn't seem to justify additional expense.

And I think that's what ViacomCBS wants to change. Trek has been skewing older for decades now, and the merchandising has been increasingly become exclusive targeting older collectors. Prodigy is the first real opportunity for Trek to reach a younger market in ages, so it's not too surprising--at least to me--that it would be the first out of the gate with the new Playmates deal.

Up until now, the market has been primarily Star Wars's.

The irony is that recently Star Wars has been sliding more and more towards adult collectors. Oh, they still have way more stuff aimed at kids today than Trek, but some of the signs are there that Star Wars merch is skewing more towards older customers of late, IMO (with Rise of Skywalker--for the first time ever--there wasn't a really big push of toys and vehicles for a Star Wars movie).

Sad but true. Tired to the collectors getting all the fun. Not helped by disrupted supply chains, minimal mix at stores or limited selection of characters.

While Rise of Skywalker demonstrated a marked decreased, that has changed dramatically with the Mandalorian and the emphasis on "The Child," and lightsabers. Add in plushes, and customizable droids and the move is away from the adult collectors, hopefully for good.

OT: I've been waiting for a Gatchaman Funko since October (Amazon finally cancelled it two weeks ago :( ).

I'll try again in January.

Prodigy is laser-focused to take on Disney and SW.

With Playmates that should be possible.

Walmart got burned pretty badly on the 2009 merchandise. It sat on shelves for months until they finally marked it all down and pushed it out the door. So it'll be interesting to see if and how much space they give to a new Star Trek line.

They are able to split it differently this time, with the collectibles in Video games and on the toy shelves. Also, they move the models very well this time of year.
