Practical Women's Superhero Costume Redesigns

An artist named Lord Ingvard wants to change women's superhero costumes:

"I love comics and superheroes as much as the next nerd, but the women’s costumes—sweet mother of Moses!—the COSTUMES. At the very least, highly impractical. And at worst, incredibly sexist. I mean, EXTREMELY so. Honestly, I don’t know why women haven’t been a lot more angry and vocal about this kind of thing over the years. Like “Ferguson riot” angry. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that expressing one’s sexuality is a natural, healthy thing, and certainly not something to be censured or shamed, but holly hammer of Thor, there’s a time and a place for everything!

Practical Women's Superhero Costume Redesigns

Only the Wonder Woman and Supergirl designs are good, IMHO; the rest are drab and mediocre. What do others think?

Zatanna, and Black Canary are pretty good too IMO. I do agree with you about the rest though.

The designs are all fine save for the fact that they'd benefit from a far richer, brighter colour palette; bit too much "school of DCU filmmaking" going on in that aspect of things.

People interested in redesigns should check out the various Project: Rooftop events, BTW. Lots of boss reimaginings of heroes and heroines there.

It seems clear (to me, anyway) that the very concept of a superhero 'costume' would never exist in what could be called "real life". Any real superpowered character would wear street clothes or, at the most, body armor. It would be all functional, nothing more. So I don't blame costumes for being colorful and wildly unrealistic - I mean, come on, anybody who strutted around in public looking like Batman and Robin from the TV series would be laughed off the street :guffaw: - because that's what comics, TV shows and movies demand.

I actually think latter-day supeheroes should be cosplayers with tricked-out gadgetry whose backstory is specifically that they were raised on superhero comic books and movies. Phoenix Jones with corporate sponsorship (or crowdfunding) and official (or unofficial) deputy status. :techman:

There was that one show that never went beyond the pilot with Rupert Grint, Harry Potter's Ron Weasly, that seemed to use a similar idea. He was some super rich guy who decided to use his money to become a superhero.
EDIT: This was a response to BigJake.

I like the Black Canary and Super Girl's design. Wonder Woman needs a more Greek influence, and a little more color.

I think all the costumes could use a little bit more color.

Oops, here's the Red Sonja one:

The other ones?

Vampirella looks too much like Buffy Summers.

Zatanna looks too much like Nico Minoru (and a white version of her at that.)

If Conan doesn't need armor, why does his friend and sometimes battle companion Sonja need it?

As mentioned previously about Supergirl, I like the costume, but would have given her a red leather flight jacket in place of a cape (and I'd so the same for her cousins as well) similar (but minus the bare midriff) to this one:

Power Girl isn't Power Girl without her costume-it's too iconic.

They all look the same.

That's the problem right there.

Ugh, enough with all the constant fawning over The Incredibles generally and Mode's no-capes rule specifically. Yes, it was a cute scene, and yes, she had a point, but no, that doesn't mean that she should necessarily be invoked in the context of Kryptonians years down the line. I'm not demanding that Supergirl wear a cape in every context ever, but if you go by that moniker, a little flair isn't exactly uncalled for. My two cents.

They're definitely practical, but they're all so bland and similar, like they all based their designs on the various future uniforms from X-Men: DoFP. A little more variety in design, cut, and color would be helpful.

In Kryptonian v jet engine. My money is on the Kryptonian. In fact Kryptonian v anything a cape could snag on, the Kryptonian wins.

Honestly, I have no problem with any of those characters more recognizable costumes anyway, but I'm open to seeing different ideas. But, I've gotten tired of the more generic "realistic" style we see in some superhero movies, and that's the vibe I get from this stuff.

Also (since she's used as an example), Carol Danvers current Captain Marvel costume is actually a good example of practical, but still an interesting superhero design. In the end though, its superheroes. I like the less "realistic" aspects of them generally. Even if some of the costumes are over the top, I don't see those alternatives as being better, and they're definitely very forgettable, which isn't a good thing.

Even if not every design here works, I do really like the idea behind it, and don't think there's any reason many of these female costumes couldn't be made to look a lot more believable and practical than they are.

Obviously there are some things like capes that you just wouldn't want to lose, but the suggestion that the only way to make a female superhero look sexy and attractive is by putting her in the skimpiest and form-fitting outfit imaginable just seems so ridiculous to me.

Feh!

I prefer all their old, impractical costumes.

I don't care what anybody else thinks about that opinion.
