Powerless - New DC Universe based Sitcom

The primetime DC Comics universe is expanding in a comedy direction. In a competitive situation, Powerless, a half-hour single-camera comedy from A To Z creator Ben Queen and Warner Bros. TV, has landed at NBC with a pilot production commitment.

The project evokes NBC’s signature comedy series The Office, but with superheroes. Based on characters from DC Comics, Powerless is a workplace comedy set at one of the worst insurance companies in America — with the twist being that it also takes place in the universe of DC Comics. The show is about the reality of working life for a normal, powerless person in a world of superheroes and villains.

It hasn’t been determined yet exactly which DC characters will appear on the show, but I hear the list is not expected to include the biggest DC brands like Batman and Superman. The focus of the series is on the ordinary, “power-less” folk working at the insurance company who often envy the men and women outside their window who make headlines with their supernatural powers. Queen, who is under an overall deal at WBTV, is the writer/executive producer.

We could get some good laughs out of this especially if we get the right characters appearing... maybe even Section 8 could make an appearance?

I've always thought at a show based on Marvel's Damage Control would be really fun. This may be as close as we get.

I would kill to see a Damage Control show.

Well, maybe just maim.

Well, maybe just commit large amounts of property damage.

As long as they cleaned it up.

Here's the first trailer.

Looks like it could be fun. I'll tune in.

It does look like fun, although I didn't find Vanessa Hudgens all that effective there. It's cool that they seem free to use the whole DC Universe even if it's just name drops. Although they're clearly not afraid to modify the characters to suit their needs, like giving Crimson Fox flight and superstrength rather than just animal-like speed, agility, senses, and sexy pheromone powers. I guess they needed a flying, superstrong character for that scene, but the only one they could get the clearance to actually depict as a character was someone as minor as Crimson Fox, so they adapted.

I love the idea for this show. Superheroes from the perspective of the common person. Looking forward to it.

By the way, it looks like Marvel's Damage Control is being made too.

The last time I remember seeing her was when I was reading Justice League Europe back in the 80s and 90s.

Well, the Crimson Fox was originally Twin sisters who traded off the identity. One was killed by a villain (I think during the JL Europe/International run). Then, years later, the second sister was murdered by The Mist along with a bunch of other international heroes for some pointless shock deaths in some comic I can't remember. A third (or second, depending on how you look at it) Crimson Fox showed up in the Green Lantern and Checkmate comics in 2006 as a member of a new Global Guardians team. She never got a backstory or even a civilian name, although she did say she was the heiress to the fortune the original Crimson Foxes left behind.

As for the trailer, it looks kind of lame, and the effects/superhero costume for Crimson Fox look like they came from the live action Tick series, but it has Alan Tudyk and might have some cool hero cameos, so I'll give it a shot.

Looks like they beat Marvel to the punch. While a comedy, it's impressive that DC has seven TV series (this, Gotham, Flash, Arrow, LoT, Supergirl, Preacher) in broadcast at the same time.

EDIT: Forgot iZombie...

After seeing the trailer I give this maybe one season. The only reason to watch is to see what z grade heroes and villains get used and that won't hold the general audiences attention.

I might have a character who--like Diamond Lil--can withstand any destructive force--but is a wimp. A Wile E. Coyote type who always seems to get blown up--staggering around.

The worst thing would be immersion in concrete.
