Pirate DVDs and Torrent Downloads of Television Shows...

Due to the greed and inpersonal contempt of the entertainment industry, and the borderline unworkable music copyright in America, many dozens of popular televison shows have sadly not seen the light of day on legitimate DVD (although in Adam West Batman's case it is two or three different production companies squabbling over it's exclusive legal rights).

Because of the easily avoidable blunders made by the studios, no official DVDs or legal downloads of televisions made available to the public would obviously fuel piracy, with consumers forced to get what they want from less reputable sources. While I rage on about copyright, at the same time I'm no friend of piracy either, from my perspective I see paranoid copyright and anarchic piracy as two sides of the same coin, with most people not getting pirate products most of the time.

But when copyright infringes on law abiding consumers in the case of classic shows not coming out on DVD, I have no sympathy for media companies when people get pirate copies of television shows that were not made available in the first place, with the only people legitimately cheated being the public.

Does anybody here own "lost" television shows on pirate DVDs or torrent?

I own TVrips of WKRP and made my own rips of Tour of Duty because they couldn't get any of the music rights for the real DVDs.

Other than that, nearly everything I would want to own is already out. But hey, more power to you. It's the same with games... they just let this stuff languish and die.

TV movies:

* Earth II (1971).
* Genesis II (1973).
* The Questor Tapes (1974).
* Planet Earth (1974).
* Spectre (1977).

TV Series:

* The Fantastic Journey (1977).
* Project U.F.O. (1978).
* LA Law Seasons 1-3 (1986).
* Hooperman (1987).
* Live Shot (1995).

TV Miniseries:

* World War III (1982).
* Amerika (1987).
* Drug Wars: The Camarena Story (1990).

Needless to say, I will be only too happy to consign all of these DVD-Rs purchased from various online traders to the dumpster if and when their respective studios release intact official versions on DVD and/or BD.

Only things i will download via rapidshare are NCIS, Stargate Atlantis season that are not available yet here in the UK.....and i just cant wait.

Don't use torrent and i cant understand downloading movies, especially older ones when you can usually get a nice DVD version with tons of extras for a song.

Not yet, but if I can think of a show that isn't out then I will download it and won't feel bad about it.

Not so much lost, but never released on DVD in any region.

Love Monkey
Reunion
Coupling (US version)
Andy Richter Controls the Universe
Top Gear

I agree with Sephiroth...not a crime since NO ONE is losing out on me having these files since I can't get them through any "authorized" means.

EDIT: I suppose only the last one counts as a popular show though. :guffaw:

Hypothetically speaking, if I was to have stuff it would be largely UK stuff that I don't see here (like Top Gear, Would I lie to you?, Mock the Week, Have I Got News For You, 8 out of 10 cats) and can't get commercially. Oh and of course when the DVD's do come out I would naturally acquire legit copies of the stuff I liked :)

I don't pirate anything. I demand my entertainment be served up to me on a silver platter (literally in this case at least as long as the DVD format persists) or I'm not bothering with it. ;) There's too damn much available that is available in an easy-to-access format for me to bother seeking things out. (Latest find: Deadwood! Wow! Four seasons should keep me busy. Are they still planning to do that rumored wrap-up movie?)

Also consider it fair game if the studios pretty much come out and said they'e not going to release something for some PC bullshit reason. Like say, Disney's Song of the South.

I download Dr Who episodes about 4 hours after their shown in the UK. I'm not proud of the fact, but hey.

I have just a few television shows that I downloaded once they were cancelled or concluded their run that haven't been released on DVD.
  • Tim Minear's The Inside (13-episode season, 7 aired on FOX)
  • Tim Minear's Drive (6 episodes produced, 4 aired on FOX)
  • Thief (6 episodes that aired on FX)
Also have a couple pilots that weren't picked up for series.
  • Aquaman / Mercy Reef (The WB)
  • Global Frequency (The WB)
I'm quite disappointed that The Inside hasn't received a series set, a la Minear's Wonderfalls, but not all that surprised. Sadly, it never seemed to have the same type of fan base coalesce around it, despite being a damn fine show.

I've never even heard of the inside... thanks for mentioning it. Looks like something I'll really enjoy.

I'm still waiting for releases of X-Men: The Animated Series and Jack & Bobby. The delay of X-Men, along with semi-official word that the series will never be released (for no apparent reason, as it happens) have me actually considering purchase of an illegitimate copy. I have never intentionally broken a law, and would continue in such a manner with thanks to the technicalities of existing copyright law, but that I've even undertaken to look into the matter is an indictment against the current copyright system and rights holders both. We need a disuse clause - a key aspect of John Locke's philosophy of property which we omitted when codifying a system based on his arguments.
