Phelps acknowledges photo using pot pipe

Olympic great Michael Phelps acknowledged "regrettable" behavior and "bad judgment" after a photo in a British newspaper Sunday showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

In a statement released to The Associated Press, the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games did not dispute the authenticity of the exclusive picture published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," Phelps said. "I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

News of the World said the picture was taken during a November house party while Phelps was visiting the University of South Carolina. During that trip, he attended one of the school's football games and received a big ovation when he was introduced to the crowd.

While the newspaper did not specifically allege that Phelps was smoking pot, it did say the pipe is generally used for that purpose and anonymously quoted a partygoer who said the Olympic champion was "out of control from the moment he got there."

The party occurred nearly three months after the Olympics, while Phelps was taking a long break from training, and apparently would have no impact on the eight golds he won at Beijing. He has never tested positive for banned substances and even agreed to extra testing before the games.

"Regrettable", huh Phelps? Do you know, that cannabis is on the illegal substances list and that you can - and if the sporting authorites are consistent should and will - get banned for two years for smoking grass?
That's especially interesting considering, that cannabis can be detected for quite a long time after consuming it, and apparently Phelps hasn't had a positive doping test. And from the article (and his statement) it doesn't sound at all like it was the first time he did that...
 
Well, there's certianly no accounting for brains here. While I personally have no problem with weed- considering Phelps' celebrity status as a world class athlete, 'stupid' doesn't even begin to describe the act of blazing up at a party where there was bound to be cameras all over the place. And that's not to mention the many people there who'd be more than happy to sell the photos to the nearest tabloid.

Congrats, Michael! You're offically a moron. :techman:
 
Honestly, who gives a shit? Getting freaked out over a guy smoking pot is idiotic. Him going while at a party isn't a surprise for anyone in Ann Arbor.

I also doubt cannabis would show up on a doping test, different things, different tests.

Yes. When I see that photo, I see "reasonable doubt" when it comes to pot use. Cleaaaarrrlly my client has been the victim of people who would use the interest to tarnish his fine name. lol.......
 
Oh, no! How dare Phelps choose an illegal smoking substance over the one that SHOULD be illegal! :rolleyes:
 
Two thoughts:

1) It's only pot, so I'm not personally bothered as I don't see why it's still illegal, but it is against the law and the rules and must have consequences, and he knew that.

2) It's about time something came up to take that smug bastard down a peg. A double dumbass on him.
 
Hopefully some of his sponsors decide to drop him. It'll be a good lesson that may someday save his life.
 
Michael Phelps is indeed dumb... for allowing himself to be photographed.

My friend wrote "Tobacco Only" on his in case the RAs tried to give him crap about it. Phelps should have taken his advice, would have prevented this whole problem.
 
Don't I speak for everyone when I say, DUH??!!!!! He has that "duh" look on his face all the time. I'm not the least bit surprised. Now, I'm a big time anti drug person but i can't say that it just being pot is that big of a deal. It's not like he was photographed doing lines or something.
