"Party Down" & "Gravity" canceled

I just found out, that "Party Down" and "Gravity" have been canceled.

They're partying no more at Starz.

Cult comedy "Party Down," which centers on a catering crew of aspiring Hollywood actors and writers, has had its renewal invitation turned down by Starz management under recently installed boss Chris Albrecht.

Ditto for "Gravity," a first-season drama which focuses on an out-patient program for suicide survivors and stars Krysten Ritter, Ivan Sergei and Ving Rhames.

Neither set the ratings world on fire; in its recent second season, "Party Down" slipped to about 125,000 viewers. The cult, in other words, was more like a coterie.

I didn't watch Gravity, only the first part of the first episode, but I felt too down at that time, so I switched it off.

But I recently discovered Party Down, and even though it has some kind of vicarious embarrassment like Arrested Development had at many times, I learnt to like that little show. I just hope Lizzy and the others get parts on other projects.

Man I loved Party Down. Sad to hear it didn't get renewed. Starz is making a mistake. Not exactly like you can base the show off ratings being a premium cable channel and all. I thought it was alot funnier than some of the other sitcoms out there. Crude humor withstanding. Ah wells. Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Lizzy Kaplan will bounce back elsewhere. Jane Lynch sure did with Glee.

Party Down was great, and it's a premise that could have gone a couple more seasons without wearing out its welcome. Sad to see it go. :(

USA should pick it up. They'd have to tone down the raunchiness a bit, but it could still be hilarious.

My favorite character is Roman. I hope the actor who plays him gets another gig soon.

Oh yeah, Roman and his hard sci fi. Wasn't he the same character in Adventureland?

party Down was about the best thing on tv, but gravity was 90 percent swing and miss and the ending was just so like the the conclusion of season four skins which is unlikely to have been seen by the writers to claim plagerism since they're both probably derivitive of some movie form the 60s I have forgotton of never seen where the hero screams his own name in a tantrum and attacks some one who is likely to kill him.

I don't think it's a sitcom. it's 30 minutes with out adds, which makes it a long sitcom or a short drama, but I prefer to think of shows like this as short drama, since who would dare call Weeds a sitcom when its practically the same product as far as design model goes. Sitdra? Sounds like one of those Hindu gods or a Japanese Monster.

Has there been many hour long sitcoms?

Was he in Adventureland? I bailed after the first 20 minutes. :rommie:

But he is an oh-so-recognizable type. Entertaining.

When I heard Party Down had been cancelled, my first thought was, how do shows like "100 Questions" (even as a summer replacement) and that Jenna Elfman show get on the networks while a brilliantly funny show like P.D. can't even get a decent run on Starz. This show would so fit into NBC's Thursday night lineup right alongside 30 Rock.

Oh well, it had a very nice and very funny 2 seasons.

I'm not surprised about Gravity. I imagine it to be hard making a TV series about suicide. There are certain subjects that I'd imagine would just be hard to joke about in general, this being one of them. I had picked up a book a few years ago, and it was a black comedy surrounding the events of 9/11. Felt it was rather insensitive towards those who had lost people and felt it was an overall offensive book, and I threw it away. I couldn't bring myself to finishing it.

If they can make a show like Dexter, then I don't see why suicide would be an impossible topic. Was Gravity a comedy? I could see it being an inky-black comedy. I wonder if it would be worth checking out on DVD. Has anyone seen it?
