starting Dec. 8, 2009 "Outer Space Astronauts"will air on SyFy.

The series follows Ripley and his crew as they travel the galaxy "seeking knowledge, adventure and whatever else they can come up with."

a futuristic comedy about eight military misfits who journey to the far reaches of the galaxy on board the O.S.S. Oklahoma......The half-hour show, which combines live-action and 2D and 3D animation technology,

The graphics may be basic and simple, but combining them with live-action elements has never been done in a series before.

Russell literally produced this in his basement for more than a year, and that allowed him to create a unique series with a sharp, sly sense of humor," said Mark Stern, executive VP of original content at Syfy

The premise reminds me of Trek. I'm guessing the production values will be low and thus cheap to purchase for SyFy.

Meet the series characters in this list of descriptions.

Perhaps TPTB will be watching this and consider a Trek New Animated Series .

Satire of science fiction "space opera" almost always sucks - it boils down to mocking pulp-hero stereotypes, in-jokes and punch lines based on lifting familiar characters and incidents from nonsense that no one over the age of eleven takes seriously anyway. Skiffy fans giggle at it and repeat the jokes to one another at parties, and everyone else sees that it's lame and surfs onward across the dial.

If you can't do it as well as Douglas Adams, you're three or four decades too late to try it at all.

The internet seems to abound with people who take the ridiculous dead seriously and cannot fake a smile. Maybe they'll find it hilarious?

Besides, if this series is so cheap it can be produced more or less by a scant handful of people, then it might be cost effective enough to be kept around, even if only devoted nerds bother to watch the show.

But yeah, the premise doesn't seem to be anything special. They promise a sort of 'dry' humour, which in theory sounds nice, so I may or may not check this out if or when it airs.

Sounds like a handful of internet series which are parodying Star Trek or the premise, many of which have the ability to be funnier because they can be cruder then what Sci-Fi channel will allow anyway.

FreezeC77 can you provide what titles & links to these series you mention?

Sounds like "Red Dwarf", only with a stated mission goal and the human race still intact.
And also having a whole crew of humans rather than a solitary one... all we're left with is it's a sitcom about misfits in space who are part of some official crew (is a mining ship really even a military affair to begin with?), which is a fairly tenuous relationship to Red Dwarf.

I think its the title that got me. 'Outer Space Astronauts'? What, as opposed to 'Inner Space Astronauts', 'Low Earth Orbit Astronauts', or 'Underwater Astronauts'?

I give it half a season before they pull it as proof that 'people hate tv shows set in space'. :(

They only ordered five episodes. I am fairly certain Syfy will air all of them.

Don't really remember links and stuff offhand, but some of the web shows that it sounds like that I've seen are those that are kind of Star Trek, Bab5ish, etc... parodies with a ship setting.

Star Wreck and the Crew are two that come off the top of my head. This show actually sounds a bit more like the Crew in its more generic mocking of the spaceship based shows.

I don't really recall the name of any of the other ones, they started to bleed together after awhile and I usually would just watch an episode and then drop it since it usually was just more of the same.

Outer Space Astronauts? Isn't that sort of like saying astro-astronauts?

but combining them with live-action elements has never been done in a series before.

Bullshit. Obviously they have never seen an episode of "Blue's Clues" or half a dozen other public television shows.

Nice to know it was just as stupid as the promos shown during Alice looked.
