If Bobby Darrin showed up today trying to get this song on the air he'd be run out of town by torch bearing mobs fronted by the PC police but back in the day you could put out a fun awesome song like this and not get burned at the stake!

Anyone notice the Clementine song is sung to the tune of Mack the Knife?

The rhythm and phrasing are the same as Bobby Darin's uptempo version of "Mack the Knife," but the melody is that of the original folk song "Clementine." The tunes of the two songs are somewhat similar, though.

A couple of Bob Clampett's "Beany and Cecil" cartoons featured a jive-talking swordfish named Jack the Knife, who sang all his lines to the tune of Bobby Darin's jazzed-up "Clementine." Perhaps they used that tune rather than "Mack the Knife" because of copyright issues.
