Of All The Things Voyager Ripped Off...

The Caretaker

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
...I never thought seaQuest DSV was one of them!

I watched the Season 2 episode The Sincerest Form Of Flattery, and it has exactly the same plot as Dreadnought.

- An experimental submarine has malfunctioned and is travelling to nuke an innocent city

- The submarine is controlled by an artificial AI of Cpt. Bridger, who transfers on board to defeat it

For ages it was bugging me what it reminded me of, and then I realised it was Voyager. I have to say Dreadnought is the better of the two episodes. Has this plot been used before seaQuest? It would make me happier if Voyager was ripping off something more credible!

:p

If only Voyager had a Dolphin on board... it would have made the series perfect! I loved that Dolphin!

:)

Just kidding...

Lieutenant Darwin...

I always thought of seaquest as a total ripoff of trek,it was trek underwater, exploring the unknown of the earth's oceans.

Well... We should keep in mind that by the 1990s, there have been countless productions of tv shows, movies and all that. So one would probably note the similarity between any episodes or movies to an earlier production to some degree.

Didn't Voyager come first? I thought Seaquest came a few years after Voyager did.
Nah, Seaquest started in '93, Voyager in '95.

DSV episode - 13 November 1994
VOY episode - 12 February 1996

Plenty of time for the writers to be...uh, "inspired" by the DSV ep. ;)

The dolphin is cute, but it's no 7 of 9 ;)

Can anyone explain to me how Chakotay got her?????

He courted he in a shameless attention to get more attention from Janeway. She stopped listening to him, so he thought he could feed Seven ideas.
I thought her interest in him was more blatant (in the very end).
She chose him for being an alpha male (which people seem to deny too often  in a possibly unconscious sexist attempt to suggest he should not be subjected to a female captain) and someone self-assured who reassures her.
I guess she wants to wear the pants without feeling like she wears the pants??

You'd prefer the dolphin in a catsuit perhaps, with giant... uh... flippers?

;)
Hm... their voices are too different. But they both look slick. :D
Darwin in Seven's catsuit photoshop would be fun too. The colours can be matched.
And those rib-like things on the back of her bodice, don't they remind you of a shark or something? Too bad dolphins are mammals.

I initially liked seaQuest, and being a "ripoff" of Trek by being underwater isn't a bad thing in itself. After all, according to Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek was supposed to be "Wagon Train" in space.

So by extension, seaQuest was supposed to be "Wagon Train" underwater :)

Speaking of ripoffs, I remember one 1990s telemovie version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and I could've sworn that the Nautilus was basically Voyager underwater. The submarine had an overall similar shape, and even had a saucer section in a steampunk style. Its secondary hull had a similar downward curve, and though there were struts/wings, the nacelles were replaced with propellers. One big ugh all around.
