I caught some of this movie on cable the other day an it made me pop in my DVD and watch the whole thing.

It has slipped my mind what an awesome, wonderfuly made, movie this is. I just love the songs in it (my favorites being, of course, Man of Constant Sorrow, the song the "Sirens" sing and the song during the Baptism.

This is just a beautiful, wonderful, fun movie.

Great, great film. I never get tired of it.

"He's bona fide! What are you?"
"I'm the damn Pater Familias!"
"Yeah, but you ain't bona fide!"

So much great dialogue and the music is perfect too.

Yeah, I watch it again from time to time. Love it. I especially love the cinematography - so, so perfect.

Oh - and the guy running the radio station? Played a vampire in True Blood. Yup!

"We're in a tight spot!"

:D

The cinematography in it really is good.

"Who do you work for, stranger?"
"I work for no man."
"What's your name?"
"I have no name."
"Well, that may expalin the trouble for you to find gainful employment."

"Hell, at least [the Baptism] would've washed off the stink of that pomade."
"I like the smell of my hair treatment, thank you very much."

My favorite Cohen Bros flick and one of my all time favs. I even love the soundtrack and I hate county music with a firey passion.

It's not really "country music" though so much as it's just a bluegrassian soul music. ;)

But, yeah, the soundtrack in this movie is awesome. I have it lying around somewhere in an old car CD changer cart.

One hundred percent agreement. A favourite flick, and a great soundtrack.

From the Not Many People Know That Dept.: This is adapted from the Odyssey, but I (and a few others, like Kim Newman) think it was inspired by the Howard Waldrop story based on the 12 Labours of Hercules, called 'A Dozen Tough Jobs'. Same setting, the South in the 20s, and the same approach to the material. Very funny story and worth tracking down. I think that's one of the reasons Penny's suitor is called Waldrip.

Damn, I gotta go watch it now! :D

^ He was also an Army barber living in Arlen, Texas. :D

J.

And he owned an all-news radio station in New York.

The Cohen brothers are geniuses. Between this movie, Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy, The Big Lebowski and Fargo and a couple others I know I'm leaving out, I haven't seen a bad movie from these huys yet.

I just added "The Big Lebowski" to my Netflix queue, I hope it's good. I do have to say "Hudsucker Proxy" turned out to be good, and I didn't have a good feeling about it to start.

Doesn't it say as much in the opening title cards?

Actually, reading on shows that while the first half of the sentence is well known, the comma foreshadows an additional revelation, which does show that the second piece of trivia is not well known. This is generally why when you quote, it's best to quote all the relevant parts, rather than solely the ones that support your assertion. ;)

The Big Lebowski is a classic.

The Dude Abides.

Big Lebowski's The Dude is one of the best comedic characters of all time. Also, John Goodman is hilarious in it.

Just make sure you make some White Russians beforehand.

I beg to differ, it IS country music. But I can understand how you might not see it that way. It bears no resemblance to the stuff they play today that's called country.
