Nostalga Talk: The Five Doctors

Okay this week I thought I would pick a serial from the classics and just begin a conversation with like minded fans..:techman:

I just watched the special edition of the Five Doctors, and I gotta say, their choices for revisions were a bit odd.. the laser like thunder bolts could have been redone, but they didn't touch them?? overall it isn't bad, just kinda strange is all..

I absolutely love this serial! It has 4 of 5 Doctors, and even though the title says the Five doctors, it seems silly that Baker isn't in it, yet it is the charm of the whole thing..

campy, and yet so compelling.. it reminds me of a good comfort movie, the princess bride..

horribly silly, and yet so pleasing that you feel like it is a good friend come back to hang out and bring you some joy..

I loved the interaction between the doctors, and my favourite scenes were with the brigadier and Troughton's doctor.. they even threw in a yeti, and had the doc in his furry coat!

Brilliant!

there are mixed reviews, this one is pretty hateful and bashes the movie..to each their own..

I have to say my fondness and love of this special resides with the views of this guy's blog instead..

either way, love it or hate it, the death of Courtney and the revival in all things classic "WHO" have really made me fall in love once again with the Five doctors special..

and yes, 15 years later and Zoe is still hot!!

One thing though... how does Susan know what cybermen are?? wasn't she gone before the tenth planet? unless she witnessed them in the invasion era??

the cybermen in this special were my favourites

In either case, it's worth it to see all the supporting characters together as well..

Cheers :)

I loved the Five Doctors when I saw it. Good, campy but just plain fun.

Agreed.. how iconic was it to show in that special the 1st Doctor's appearance with Susan being chased by a Dalek...

Brilliant...

just Brilliant..

The tower of Rassilon set was excellent for it's day and budget..

too bad they didn't write more scenes within the tower with many more traps or puzzles.

And to throw in sarah jane smith, pertwee and bessie...

Wow.. just wow..

the historical references are just amazing..

Maybe the wax Tom Baker can appear with Matt Smith. He hasn't melted, has he?

They wouldn't have to explain the aging like with Davison in Time Crash.

A little like the red nose day specials, The Five Doctors really was just a lot of fun.

Look, it's the Three Doctors :p

I like the Five Doctors, it isn't supposed to be high drama, it's a celebration of the show and people who bash it too harshly really miss the point.

Plus it gave us the Raston Warrior...the most dangerous creature in all of creation! I wish the new series would bring it back!!

did we ever get an explanation as to who created the Raston Warrior Robot??

ya know what..

imagine if the BBC created fully poseable and highly detailed Plastic skinned, and flexible framed with foam muscled figures of those deceased doctors..as well done as the wax dummy from the Five Doctors Special..

then all they need do is get CGI for the faces, and stop motion photography for scenes with action, and doubles for running scenes..

that would certainly cut their costs in half..they could do that with the lost troughton episodes which have audio remnants as well..then you have a young and period version, with just the faces having to be CGI.. it can be done well

Terminator Salvation
ETC..

Sigh... One can dream..

I remember Tom Baker on one of the Dr who commentaries stating how people were complimenting him at the time on his acting skills and how good he was looking in the five doctors.......cracked me up.

The Five Doctors was what really made me a Doctor Who fan. Prior to that, it was something I really wasn't seriously invested in and never really saw an entire story from beginning to end. This was where I became a lifelong fan of the program.

I remember it airing on my local PBS station just a few days after the BBC broadcast (but then it aired on several other PBS stations a few days before the BBC broadcast so it could be on the Children In Need night there).

I like "The Five Doctors" for the same reason I like any episode that gets wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey. My current favorites are, of course, "Space" and "Time."

I just like it when time-travel is treated with serious respect for the paradoxes it can inherently cause. I suspect that it's because deep down, it just doesn't make sense to me that time-travel is impossible.

If it were, how many historians would have been hanging around to spectate the Crucification, for example? Crowds of historians with futuristic camera phones all streaming the event back live to their home time periods boggles the mind ...

And what if one or two fanatics got a time machine and decided that Jesus needed to be saved? Or perhaps rabid atheists wanting to prove that things would work out the same even if he lived?

Of course, if the Resurrection were actually a pre-destination paradox (time-travellers come from the future and scientifically revive Jesus three days after his death), that would throw a whole new wrinkle into things ...

Urfff ... that way lies madness. :wtf:

In any case, I love intelligent time-travel stories, and "The Five Doctors" is a nice one. Not as wibbly-wobbly as "Space" and "Time," but still good.

I definitely agree that the Raston Warrior Robots are ripe for a revival in the current series. The design was simple and so stands the test of time well. They're hideously dangerous and could probably give the Daleks a run for their money.

that's churchill!

Bessie was a great earth like prop, almost intrinsic to the 3rd doctor's overall character..

would be nice to see the new doc with something similar..besides the earth like prop, police box that is..
