The Giant of Light will make his way on Netflix next year, with a new 3D CGI series to be released worldwide simultaneously in Spring 2019. The series is adapting a popular manga sequel to the original 1966 series that is currently released in the U.S. by Viz.

Anime Network: Ultraman 3D CG Anime Premieres on Netflix in Spring 2019

For those Ultra-fans unfamiliar with the manga version, while it is a direct sequel to the original series, it ignores the further Ultra-series entries in-between while re-imagining several of those other Ultra characters. It centers around the son of Shin Hayata, the host of the original Ultraman, who in his teens discovers that he has superhuman powers, and is given a mech suit by the Science Patrol in order to fight evil aliens. The biggest departure from the usual Ultra formula is that he does so mostly human-sized.

For that reason, mostly, I would have wished for an original series using the usual formula of a giant-sized hero fighting giant monsters. But I still like the manga for the many referrences to the original series, as well as the story working on its own terms, so I am excited for this. And also, if this is a success, it could persuade Netflix to bring more Ultraman into the international market.

I also hope they get Susumu Kurobe to voice Shin Hayata.

I know not much about Ultraman.
I have only seen a animated serie when I was young, I cried when the dragon/crocodile who was raised by a boy turned evil and attacked Ultraman

I was excited for this until I saw it's based on the manga.
I mean, it might be fine; I'll check it out, but when I read the first volume, I wished he was a little more, well, Ultra.

I had an Ultraman action figure as a kid when I lived in Japan (Air Force brat). Had no idea who he was but he looked cool. Saw some of TV show as well. Didn't know a lick of Japanese, but it was fun to watch.

I haven't gotten around to checking out any of the Ultraman series, but I have seen them on a buch of them on Crunchyroll and one on Shout Factory. I might have to check this out too.

Just watched the final episode. It is a very faithful adaptation of the manga series, so if you've read that, you won't get many surprises out of this show.

While it is a direct sequel to the original series, it's much closer in tone to "Ultraman Nexus". And while neither the Ultramen, nor the monsters are giants, the action is really a highlight of the show, here's where the CGI really shines (as opposed to slower character and plot moments, when the human characters have a lot of unnecessary movement.

All in all, it was very good, and I'm hoping for a second season. And also for Netflix to bring some of the live-action Ultra shows to Germany (we only got Ultraman X on Crunchyroll).

So I know very little about Ultraman and came to this cold - I thought it was fairly enjoyable if a little repetitive. Early on they *seem* to set up a dilemma about Shinjiro not being willing to kill expect... it goes nowhere. He basically goes "em..." and then slaughters any monsters he comes across (with one exception). He does this a number of times and once he's killed once, it's odd they keep returning to it.

Also a really odd minor thing - three of the bad-guys all have their left arm cut off - why always the left arm?
