Netflix has announced the new anime series "Godzilla: Singular Points" for global release in 2021.

Let's be hopeful they have taken the criticism of the previous anime trilogy to heart.

The producing studios are bones, known for their hit anime "My Hero Academia", and Orange, who produced "Beastars".

Atsushi Takahashi will serve as director. He started out as animator at Studio Ghibli, was even assisting director on the oscar-winning "Spirited Away", and has experience as main director on animes like "Blue Exorcist: The Movie" or "Doraemon the Movie 2017".

The series will be written by Toh EnJoe. The article linked above calls this his TV writing debut, but he's actually written two episodes of "Space Dandy" before, a show that Takahashi also worked on as director on twelve episodes. EnJoe will also serve as editor.

The human characters will be designed by Kazue Kato, creator of the popular "Blue Exorcist" comics, while the kaijus will be designed by animator Eiji Yamamori of Studio Ghibli fame.

Yeah, that was mediocre. Drawing on Ghibli talent is promising, though.

As I'm a Kamen Rider fan, the title makes me wonder if Godzilla is immune to changes in the timeline.

Sounds like this has some pretty good talent behind it, so hopefully it will be good. Even though I'm a huge Godzilla fan, I never bothered with the other trilogy, since most of the reactions to it weren't very positive.

Space Dandy was a blast so if Takahashi was part of that so much the better IMO. I like the character designs, not sure it looks real "Godzilla" but I'm curious about it.

It couldn't possibly be worse than the anime trilogy, which somehow committed the sin of improbably and mind-bogglingly worse than Godzilla '98, so I'll give it a shot.

I’ve never been able to get into anime, but for Godzilla I’ll give it a shot. I like the fact that in the drawing of all the characters I can actually tell them apart. One of the big issues I had with the trilogy was that almost everyone looked the same.

I can’t quite get over the fact that they’re bring back both Jet Jaguar and Gabara by the looks of it. I would have preferred it if they changed Jet Jaguar’s design to make him a little less goofy looking.

I'd say it was Rodan, Anguiras, and Baragon.

Not sure there's ever been anything like that water monster, though. (Unless I've completely forgotten something.) I liked the design of that.

Wikizilla asserts that the featured kaiju besides Godzilla include Rodan, Anguirus, Jet Jaguar (the Ultraman-knockoff robot hero from Godzilla vs. Megalon), Gabara (a sort of cat-faced toad monster from All Monsters Attack), Titanosaurus (a long-necked aquatic dinosaur from Terror of Mechagodzilla), and Manda (a giant snake monster debuting in the non-Godzilla film Atragon and returning in Destroy All Monsters). But it notes that most of those identifications are unconfirmed. Rodan and Jet Jaguar are self-evident, the others more iffy.

Even Rodan is just speculation at this point. While the pteranodon creature is obviously highly similar to Rodan, it’s also much smaller and we see a whole flock of them.

You could say similar things about the variants of Gyaos in different Gamera reboots. Anyway, Rodan's real name is Radon, which is simply an abbreviation of "pteranodon." (The American release transposed the vowels because Radon was a brand of laundry detergent or something at the time.) So it stands to reason that any pteranodon would be a Radon/Rodan.

(Similarly, Anguirus is just an abbreviation for the Japanese pronunciation of "ankylosaur.")

Interesting. I'd never heard that before. When I'd heard clips of English dubs that called him Radon I just assumed they were arbitrarily changing his name, like when they called Godzilla Gigantis.

I recognized Jet Jaguar instantly, but I wasn't sure if the pteranadon was supposed to be Rodan or a new similar Kaiju. None of the others really jumped out at me when I watched the trailer.

If they're continuity-geeky enough to reference Jet Jaguar, of all things, then I'm sure they'll use the classic monsters rather than some new approximations thereof.

Eventually there'll be some Godzilla on your Godzilla show, yes?

...

Sorry - I have Jurassic Park on the brain lately so I couldn't resist. But still a weird choice for a trailer.
