getting a jump on the upcoming (dec 12) animated short trek: ephraim and dot... apparently about an enterprise DOT-7 repair drone and a mycelial tardigrade. directed by michael giacchino (composer for the kelvin trilogy) with a voice performance by kirk thatcher (punk on the bus in star trek IV: the voyage home).

NCC-1701 in clear view. I wasn't expecting that.

I've also heard this is unscripted, but maybe that's actually the other animated Short Trek.

It looks really cute, and I wonder if the composer being the one to helm it means it will be kinda Fantasia like with its use of music.

Both this and The Girl Who Made The Stars look gorgeous, even though they are different styles. Only pet peeve is the tardigrade making sounds in space but, oh well.

They call him Ripper, Ripper, faster than lightning,
No one you see, can travel like he,
And we know Ripper lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, in the mycel!

Just in case some of these young whipper-snappers around here don't know the tune...

Interesting. I do think THIS is a much better use of the "Short Treks" format than trying to tell full 45min episodes in 15 minutes. This truly looks like something that only ever could be told as a short story.
  • I do like a short story focusing on creatures and robots - and animation makes a lot of sense for that
  • Don't care for the graphic style - at all. It's pretty ugly, but whatever
  • I'm actually happy a Tardigrade is back - IMO Ripper was the most interesting thing about the session 1 plot. I wanna' learn more about how Tardigrades behave, backstory, whatever
  • It's really, really interesting that ALL the short Treks so far focus on the Enterprise. Either they're desperate, testing the waters, or try to use it as a "backdoor pilot" to convince fans and studio bosses. I doubt a "Pike" show is a sure thing ye, but we'll definitely know soon

i like the idea of re-exploring discovery‘s additions to the canon instead of just falling back on nostalgia by pulling something from TOS or something. the tardigrade was a distinct part of discovery, it’s cool they’re not forgetting that.
