Neil Gaiman fills in blanks about his episode (Doctors Wife spoilers)

Neil Gaiman has posted a rather extensive Q&A to his blog about the Doctor's Wife that actually serves to cover a few points of criticism regarding the episode, provide tantalizing glimpses as to what he wanted to do (like making reference to stuff from the David Whitaker novelisation), a bit of gossip (Karen Gillan can't swim which is why there was no pool scene in the TARDIS), Idris' origin, why an Ood, and he gives the final word on the "pull to open" controversy. He also talks about what he might do if he ever novelizes the episode. Scroll down past his discussion of the new edition of American Gods.

Interesting stuff!

Ah, an actual explanation for who Idris was originally. They really needed to have a clearer explanation of that in the episode.

Cool Q&A! With all the references to "If I ever novelize it...", I think it would be awesome if he does novelize the episode at some point. Here's hoping... :)

Re: Neil Gaiman fills in blanks about his episode (Doctors Wife spoile

I've always figured the "PULL TO OPEN" was for both doors. The phone door and the POLICE BOX door. If you need the phone - PULL TO OPEN. If you need the BOX, PULL TO OPEN. I've always chuckled that the door goes in. Funnily enough, my "action figure" TARDIS doors PULL TO OPEN.

Also, what he said about "hearing his favorite Doctors all say, "Fear me. I killed all of them." I can totally hear it in my head. Pertwee would say it with a combination of disdain, impatience, and pomposity. Tom Baker would say it loudly and mischievously with a wicked grin. Eccleston would say it wild, pleading eyes, with a raised pitch. Tennant would maybe say it with a hiss through gritted teeth. But I think Smith had a bit of all of that in his delivery.

Wow, the very first draft of the Doctor talking about the Corsair was excellent and I wish they'd kept it in. I respectfully disagree with Stephen Moffat. It doesn't answer the questions of mystery about the Doctor, it just gives us a tiny snapshot into a singular moment of him being a child and wanting to run away with another Time Lord who explored the stars.

Re: Neil Gaiman fills in blanks about his episode (Doctors Wife spoile

I'm just going to imagine that it happened like it said in the initial draft. That the conversation took place. Nothing on screen said it didn't. :-)

Re: Neil Gaiman fills in blanks about his episode (Doctors Wife spoile

Actually I think Moffat was right, the idea of another Timelord effectively being the Doctor before the Doctor detracts a little from him, just my two pence worth.

Very interesting stuff though!

It's like in Last Crusade... when Indiana meets the guy at the beginning of the movie... who looks just like a grown up Indiana...

I think Moffat was right.

Wow, what a great Q&A which makes love Gaiman all the more. I hope he's offered the chance to novelize the episode. I'd definitely read it. :D

Off topic: I'm a bit annoyed that he's re-releasing American Gods with more material and essays, but only because I only just read the book for the first time last year. Now I'll have to go back and read it all over again! :scream:

Re: Neil Gaiman fills in blanks about his episode (Doctors Wife spoile

I think this sums up my exact thoughts about showing new episodes to people. My first episode was Dalek and it worked quite well. I hadn't thought about Human Nature, but I like that idea too.

Episodes I've shown people to lure them in:

BLINK

THE GIRL IN THE FIREPLACE

DALEK

THE EMPTY CHILD/ THE DOCTOR DANCES

HUMAN NATURE/THE FAMILY OF BLOOD

Classic Episodes like Douglas Adams' CITY OF DEATH.

Although you might just want to start with THE ELEVENTH HOUR and come forward. Or start with ROSE and come forward. (I don't think I'd recommend starting with THE UNEARTHLY CHILD and coming forward, but it more or less worked for me..)

Re: Neil Gaiman fills in blanks about his episode (Doctors Wife spoile

I just love Neil Gaiman. I hope he writes another episode soon.

Re: Neil Gaiman fills in blanks about his episode (Doctors Wife spoile

niel gaiman's good omens is now ready for pre-order on the nook as well as the tenth anniversary of american gods. need to read that one. is there a proper reading list for his books or are they all open ended?

Re: Neil Gaiman fills in blanks about his episode (Doctors Wife spoile

^All his novels to date are open-ended; American Gods takes place in the same universe as Anansi Boys but is very different in tone and has an entirely separate plot.

Re: Neil Gaiman fills in blanks about his episode (Doctors Wife spoile

Re: Neil Gaiman fills in blanks about his episode (Doctors Wife spoile

I'm seeing Neil Gaiman next week when he's in D.C. for an event at the National Press Club. Two friends and I are buying signed copies of the tenth anniversary edition of American Gods.
