Narek Hrai Yan

bookworm8571

Commander
Red Shirt
I know they are the villains but I like Narek Hrai Yan and his sister/Tal Shiar handler Narissa. Looking at it from their perspective, they are protecting their decimated people and the universe in general from the deadly threat posed by synthetic life forms. Soji and Dahj are likeable but maybe they really are “Seb Cheneb,” the destroyers of all things and Picard is a dangerously deluded idealist. We don’t really know yet where it’s headed. One of my favorite parts of this series are the Romulan characters like Narek and his sister and the little tidbits they are revealing about the Romulan culture. The Romulan ex Borg and her Romulan tarot cards, the Romulan penchant for drama, stubborn Northerners with forehead ridges, meditation Romulan style, secret names, etc. i hope they don’t kill off these characters.

Narek is the only character I don't like. I've never liked the actor in anything he's been in. It's not that he's bad, I just don't like the characters he chooses to play. Narissa is a campy villainess in the Seska mould. I like her but I can't see her lasting much longer.

I’ve never seen either of the actors in anything else. He’s supposed to be a slippery, treacherous character and the actor has done a good job. Given the Darth Vader music that plays when he shows up, it’s hard to miss what the writers mean to convey. But I still actually like the character better than Elnor the heroic Romulan knight.

Peyton List is always great in anything. She did amazing as Poison Ivy in Gotham recently.

Elnor and Laris are the best Romulans in my opinion. Also the Romulan warrior nun from Elnor's first episode. The Romulans have been a revelation in this series.

I think Laris and Zhaban are my favorite Romulans too. I don’t hate Elnor but I don't like him as well as the others. I suppose we can assume they learned their English from Irish, English or Australian teachers, given the accents.

I see them as spoiled brat Romulan aristocrats trying to maintain their imperial order, post-imperial collapse. That they think they’re on the side of the angels (even though they’ll prove not to be) is complete dumb luck to them. They’d be just as into Klingon genocide if the Star Empire we’re still at full force.

I wish she showed a bit more character beyond the one-note eeeevil, and he is easy on the eyes enough to be less annoying, but, yeah, I hope they both have poetic, grizzly, ends. Or escape, if thwarted, to retire back on some familial estate as would happen in the real world.

Spoiled brat aristocrats or zhat vash as a family business or both? I would also assume they’re fairly high status Romulans and maybe nobility. The upper classes are probably the ones who were evacuated and both Narek and Narissa take a high handed attitude with underlings. Narissa wants to smash and destroy and Narek likes to play with his food and learn what makes it tick. These two were probably children when the planet was destroyed and maybe they have a personal reason to hate the synths if close family was killed. Maybe they were raised to take over the family super secret spying business and destroy synths.

Narek is a boring character I don't like him or Narissa at all. I don't care if their characters were killed by the xbs or the synths.

In his first episode, when he met Soji, he mentioned he had a brother. Maybe something happened to him.
We know something happened to him. It was almost the first thing Narek told us about himself - that he had a brother who died. Fairly recently, if I recall correctly.

I didn’t mind him on The Crown, but I agree, he’s never been great in anything

Quite Frankly, I find Narissa much more interesting than Narek... my opinion of him could be basically summed up as "he's so full of shit." Narissa on the other hand is just so slimy, snake-like and smug; I absolutely love to hate her. Incidentally, Narek's best scenes were with her in my opinion, with their whole bitter sibling rivalry angle. She's clearly a very disturbed person, who's used to treating her little brother like dirt, constantly tearing him down, pushing his buttons and invading his personal space to make him squirm and keep him uncomfortable and in her grip. Their relationship reminds me of Zuko and Azula from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Incidentally, some fans love incest-shipping those two as well, so at least it's kind of understandable why people see that in Narek and Narissa. But like with the siblings from the cartoon, I see more of a cruel and one-sided mind game centered on power than anything consensual and physical.
