What where the names of the Starships like the Enterprise on the Original Series ? From memory and from the names on the decal sheet of the plastic model i made when i was a kid where the names : Enterprise,Exeter,Farragut,Constitution,Constellation,Kongo,Yorktown,Lexington,Intrepid,Republic,Hood,Potempkin and Valiant. The Defiant came around later ? Back to work

The only ones we KNOW are 'like the Enterprise', in absolute terms, are:

Constitution (shown as a graphic)
Exeter
Lexington
Potemkin
Defiant
Hood

Intrepid MAY be a Constitution class ship, but it's debatable. It's on-screen registry (NCC-1831) would indicate that it WASN'T.

Valiant most certainly wasn't... any of the valiants, actually. A Taste of Armageddon is the most 'recent' Valiant mentioned, and that's still BEFORE the ship class launched.

Republic has been often declared one, but would a brand new ship (since we're talking 15 years before TOS) be used as a cadet ship? Again, the registry and AGE would indicate something else.

So far as I know, there are no other on screen or in dialog strong references to starships like the Gray Lady.

Original Series Constitution class starships
(verified on-screen)

Enterprise
Constellation
Defiant
Exeter
Hood
Potemkin
Lexington
Excalibur

that's eight.

I also say Constitution because, come on, everyone knows
that's the class.

So that's nine.

Three more to make "twelve in the fleet"?

I'd say...

Intrepid
Yorktown
Farragut.

There's yer twelve.

There is no on-screen registry for Intrepid. She is described as a "starship" however, which on Star Trek meant "a ship like the Enterprise".

There were several different lists in Whitfield's The Making of Star Trek. Don't have my copy with me here at work, but I do remember that the lists were in the first third of the book, somewhere.

They were all listed in the technical manual from the 70s. Anyone got one?

//EDIT

Never mind, I got it:

Name Registry
USS Constitution NCC-1700
USS Enterprise NCC-1701
USS Farragut NCC-1702
USS Lexington NCC-1703
USS Yorktown NCC-1704
USS Excalibur NCC-1705
USS Exeter NCC-1706
USS Hood NCC-1707
USS Intrepid NCC-1708
USS Valiant NCC-1709
USS Kongo NCC-1710
USS Potemkin NCC-1711
USS Constellation NCC-1017
USS Republic NCC-1371

Actually, there IS. If you notice in 'Court Martial', the ship that is nearly done with repairs, and the registry the Commodore is looking at is NCC-1831. He then goes to the com and orders the 'Intrepid' cleared out.

Yes -- they were memos exchanged among the producers, offering proposed lists. They're reproduced on pp. 163-5 of the book, at the beginning of Part II. The discussion began with an August 8, 1967 memo by D.C. Fontana in which she suggested a list of 11 ship names, plus an alternate list of more international names to choose from. Her suggested list:

Enterprise
Exeter
Essex
Excalibur
Lexington
Yorktown
Endeavour
El Dorado
Excelsior
Saratoga
Constellation

Her alternate list:
Hornet
Wasp
Farragut
Hood
Bonhomme Richard

"Monitor or Merrimac, depending on your loyalties"
Tori
Lafayette
Ari
Krieger

Interesting that Excelsior as a Starfleet vessel name originated here. Also Saratoga.

Bob Justman responded the next day with a memo recommending the following 11 names:

Enterprise
Essex
Excalibur
Lexington
Yorktown
Endeavour
Eagle
Constellation
Hornet
Wasp
Lafayette

Whitfield goes on to mention a list of 14 names that he says "have been established for starships":

Enterprise
Exeter
Excalibur
Lexington
Yorktown
Potemkin
Republic
Hood
Constitution
Kongo
Constellation
Farragut
Valiant
Intrepid

...with the latter four all being destroyed. This excludes Defiant because the book was written before "The Tholian Web" came out. But there was no actual onscreen mention of Constitution or Kongo.

Are there 12 or 13? For years I thought the response was there are only 12 "others" like it in the fleet.

The exact line was "Only twelve like it in the fleet." People have interpreted that both ways over the years -- twelve in addition to the E, or twelve altogether.

Twelve altogether, IMHO, is the only way to interpret the line.
IMHO.

"Monitor or Merrimac, depending on your loyalties"
And if your loyaties are to the south, it would be "Virginia," not "Merrimac." Read a little history, Dorothy. :)

It's debatable that Stone's looking at that ship. He could be looking at that "1697" just above the Enterprise. Or it's possible Intrepid is 1700 and as it's so far from completion, delaying that work in favor of Enterprise won't really matter.

Based strictly on what's onscreen, in my opinion, nothing definitive can be said as to which of those ships is which, save for the Enterprise.
