Names for future Luna class ships

Epsilon IX

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I decided to put this into the Trek Literature forum since the Luna class ships have only appeared in the books and never on the small or big screen. However, if you mods out there think it would be better somewhere else, then feel free to move it by all means.

The way I see it is that Starfleet would wish to build more of the Luna class starships, the reasons being that Command have been impressed by their performances so far (one of them was instrumental in saving the Federation from complete anihilation after all!), or would wish to build more to replendish Starfleet's numbers after wars with the Borg and Dominion, as well as the two already lost (the Luna, and the Charon), and to have more ships the cover greater ground on the exploration front.

The Luna class ships are all named after moons in our Solar System, and it seems all the good ones have all been taken (eg. The Gallilean group of moons orbiting Jupiter, as well as a couple of the Large Outer moons around Saturn). Here are a list of names of moons of the Solar Systen which haven't already been given to the Luna class (also one has to bear in mind that most of these are little more than small lumps of rock astronomically speaking):

Mars: Phobos, Deimos
Jupiter: Metis, Adrastea, Thebe, Themisto, Leda, Himalia, Lysithea, Elara, Ananke, Praxidike, Harpalyke, Iocaste, Euanthe, Thyone, Euporie, Thelixinoe, Helike, Orthosie, Hermippe, Mneme, Herse, Pasithee, Chaldene, Arche, Isonoe, Erinome, Kale, Aitne, Tagyete, Carme, Kalyke, Eukalede, Kallichore, Eurydome, Hegemone, Pasithae, Sponde, Cellene, Megaclite, Callirhoe, Sinope, Autonoe, Aoede, Kore
Saturn: Pan, Daphnis, Atlas, Prometheus, Pandora, Epimetheus, Janus, Aegaeon, Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Telesto, Calypso, Dione, Helene, Polydeuces, Methone, Anthe, Pallene, Hyperion, Iapetus, Kiviuq, Ijiraq, Paaliaq, Siarnaq, Tarqeq, Phoebe, Skathi, Skoll, Greip, Hyrokkin, Mundilfari, Jarnsaxa, Narvi, Bergelmir, Aegir, Suttungir, Bestla, Farbauti, Hati, Thrymr, Surtur, Kari, Fenrir, Ymir, Loge, Farnjot, Albiorix, Bebhionn, Erriapis, Tarvos, Chiron, Themis
Uranus: Cordelia, Ophelia, Bianca, Cressida, Desdemona, Portia, Juliet, Rosalind, Belinda, Cupid, Perdita, Puck, Mab, Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Francisco, Caliban, Stephano, Trinculo, Sycorax, Margaret, Prospero, Setebos, Ferdinand
Neptune: Naiad, Thalassa, Despina, Larissa, Proteus, Nereid, Halimede, Sao, Laomedeia, Psamanthe, Neso
Pluto: Hydra, Nix
Haumea (dwarf planet): Hi'iaka, Namaka
Eris (dwarf planet): Dysnomia

Which ones do you think sound best? My personal favourites would be Phobos, Deimos, Adrastea, Pandora, Epimetheus, Janus, Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Telesto, Calypso, Hyperion, Iapetus, Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Proteus

Phobos, Deimos, Janus, Mimas, Enceladus, Dione, Calypso, Hyperion, Iapetus would be mine.

but i'd like to see some name for moons outside Earth's system...

Like captcalhousn, I would go with the most famous, too.

Titania sounds like a good sister ship for the Titan (sequential NCC numbers, same equipments and systems). Ananke is pretty cool, too (means destiny, IIRC). Also, Caliban and Francisco sound nice. Dysnomia, for the whole Pluto debate.

Names I would avoid: Megaclite (ehm), Prometheus (already used), Pandora (to avoid Avatar memories), Calypso (used of a Captain's Yacht, IIRC), Miranda (used), Trinculo (ehm), Sycorax (taken by an alien species in Doctor Who).

As for moons outside the solar system, there is T'Khut (Vulcan's moon/twin planet in some novels), and of course Praxis. Other literary sources would be cool, too, like Ithil and Isil (the elven names for the moon in LotR).

Kera
Phinda (Both Tellar)

Penraddo
Barrado
Jerrado
Derna
Endalla (all for Bajor)

Cinera
Seyann (Delta IV)

Varnex
Kifau (Mestiko)

The twin moons of Andor (whatever they're called- establish names!)

Zasharu (New Mirada- unlike the others, not a Federation world, but allied :)). For that matter, Praxis.

...as well as the two already lost (the Luna, and the Charon)...

Why does everyone seem to think the Luna was lost? It was damaged in an accident during shakedowns and a number of engineers were killed, but the ship survived, was repaired, and is "currently" in service. The Charon is the only Luna-Class ship that's actually been destroyed.

Dysnomia, for the whole Pluto debate.

Not really a good name for a Starfleet vessel, since it means "lawlessness." (It was a consolation prize when the dwarf planet nicknamed "Xena" got the official name Eris instead; they obliquely named its moon after Lucy Lawless.)

The name "Pandora" has cultural resonances stretching far, far back before Avatar, although of course those resonances are somewhat infamous (the person who unleashed the evils of the world). And Sycorax was the mother of Caliban in The Tempest; both the moon and the Doctor Who aliens were named for her. Again, though, it's an inauspicious name, since Sycorax was an evil witch. And Trinculo was a comic-relief drunkard in the same play, again not an ideal namesake.

That said, Chris. What would your picks be?

I like Sycorax.

I know the meaning, but the name is official nonetheless, so I think it's fair game. And I always liked my ships named a bit idiosyncratically (GR's Andromeda ships and especially The Culture come to mind :D)

Indeed Pandora brought evils in the world, but she was also the keeper of hope, so the association is somewhat ambiguous. I didn't remember about Sycorax being in The Tempest.

Lame. They should have just had some fun and named it Planet Xena. Why does every planet or dwarf planet have to have some stuffy old Greek or Roman name?

They already finished that. The names for Uranus' moons are taken from Shakespeare's and Pope's works, and many recently discovered moons have been named using different pantheons, as the Norse, Inuit and Gallic giants for Saturn's moons and Hawaiian deities for Haumea's moons.

Good for the moons. But I want a planet or dwarf planet with a fun name!

Question: Has it ever been said that Luna Class ships have to be named specifically for moons in the Sol System?

From what I read there is no real reason why a luna class ship would have to be named after a moon other than the fact that it's a luna class ship. which that being said my picks for names for new luna class vessels are:
Enceladus,T'khut,Phinda, one of the twin moons of andor whatever they might be called and Praxis.
