I am going to be very, very upset if the Red Sox trade away Mookie Betts for prospects instead of paying him what he's due.

That being said, I think Chaim Bloom is going to be a fantastic hire for them.

That's a solid hire, though it's regrettable that he's going to the dumpster fire that is the Mets. Beltran has been regarded as a future manager for years, and very narrowly lost out to Aaron Boone for the Yankees job. As I recall, during his second tenure in Houston, he was instrumental in teaching the players how to recognize the Yankees in the ALCS and the Dodgers in the World Series were tipping pitches.
 
The Marlins have declined their $16 million option on infielder Starlin Castro for 2020 and will pay him a $1 million buyout, allowing him to become a free agent.

Cubs third base coach Brian Butterfield and strength/conditioning coach Tim Buss will follow Joe Maddon to the Angels.

I don't have strong feelings one way or the other about those two, but I still think the whole coaching staff needs to be turned over. Ross should be able to get who he wants without any forced holdovers.

Hottovy may or may not have had a hand in turning Darvish around. Most reports say it was learning Kimbrel's curve that was the biggest difference maker. The rest of the pitching staff either stayed the same or regressed.

Iapoce seemed about the same. Most of the lineup appeared to be ignoring him in favor of doing whatever the hell they wanted at the plate and on the bases.

MLB submitted a proposal for a signing deadline for multi-year free-agent contracts. The union rejected it.

Manfred is such a disingenuous piece of shit. "Don't worry, guys, we're concerned at how long it took for guys to get signed last offseason, too! So how about we put a hard deadline in place for multi-year contracts, which would in no way fuck over your leverage by putting you under the gun to sign or take a one-year deal?"

Good to see the MLBPA was smart enough to tell him to take a hike.

First order of business is to get Bobby Bonilla into playing shape so can play left field and earn his money. Jason

I imagine Boston would love for him to do so because they've said very publicly they're in cost-cutting mode, but I just don't see him getting a contract on the free-agent market anywhere near what he's currently earning, given his age, his knees and his status as an all-bat / no-glove player. I mean, if you're Martinez, you basically have to rule out all of the NL as a possible landing spot, because not even the Pirates are insane enough to try and stash him in left field. And, in a rarity, essentially every AL team has a fairly well-entrenched DH.
 
One month ago today, I was in the intensive care ward of a hospital in Baltimore, and I thought I would be mostly blind for the rest of my life.

Today I was at the World Series parade in DC.

I bounced between tears and incredible joy from the moment I stepped off the Metro.

This evening the news broke that Stephen Strasburg is opting out of his contract, and the Natonals have already made some decisions on free agents. The Nats are going to look different next year. Not a full 2003 Marlins teardown, but I would not be surprised if Mark Lerner's thinking is, "We have our trophy, now we can scale back on the payroll and do a partial rebuild."

The qualifying offer, or QO, is worth the mean salary of MLB's 125 highest-paid players from the previous season; teams can extend it to their impending free agents (with two conditions; the player has to have never received a QO in his career, and he had to spend the entire season with that team). That player has ten days to decide whether or not to accept it; if he declines it, any team that signs him has to surrender a top draft pick to his previous team.

Pretty much. The QO is a tool to reduce player mobility, and when Michael Weiner agreed to it in the 2012 - 2016 CBA, Marvin Miller was almost certainly spinning in his grave, because it fucks over mid-tier players. No one is going to blink an eye at giving up a first- and a fourth-round pick for World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg, but for someone like Odorizzi, who has been decidedly league-average and wildly inconsistent throughout his career? Different story.
