Yes, it's a thing, and it's coming up May 25.

So, since we're all geeks here to one degree or another, this contest is all about the geek lifestyle.
Cosplay, geeky merch, gatherings and conventions, that sort of thing. You may use your own photos, or photos off the interwebs, but not from any sort of dramatized media (news media and documentaries are fine).
If you want to have a poster as your entry, it should be from a photo of the actual poster hanging somewhere, not just a digital version of the poster.

You may enter up to 3 avatars. Each must not be larger than 200x200 pixels and/or 1 Mb in data, and, of course, you should keep it safe for work (so no cosplay-themed porn or Marvel-themed sex toys, you pervs).

Had to look that one up. The idea of Towel Day seems rather silly to me, as opposed to National Gorilla Suit Day or National Talk Like a Pirate Day.
