Mind meld across space

Darth Thanos

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
In previous series, a Vulcan mind meld was done in close proximity, usually placing the fingers over the other's head (which may be required, or just to help focus, I'm not sure). In this series, however, Zarek and Burham can communicate across vast distances in space. Had Vulcans done something like this before, or is it a new thing done by this series?

Note, when I say "before" I mean in series or films made before Discovery, even if their events and characters are later in the in-story chronology.

Well, Spock has the ability to sense the deaths of 400 Vulcan crewmembers on the USS INTREPID in "The Immunity Syndrome." So, distance is definitely a part of that. There is also ancient Vulcan weapons that use amplification of telepathic ability as a weapon.

So, while probably nothing like what was shown in Star Trek in terms of Vulcan abilities, I see it as a plausible expansion of powers, especially since Michael likely had already had close contact with Sarek in some way.

T'Pol and Trip were in meld-like communication in ENT, across light years.

Spock felt V'Ger all the way from Vulcan.
