Mass Effect 2 voice cast revealed...

Sheep

Vice Admiral
Admiral
...and my inner geek just exploded. In addition to the main cast (Jennifer Hale's female Shepherd = WIN!), we get...

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/10/mass-effect-2-cast-bolstered-by-battlestar/

* Martin Sheen (Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez's dad) -- Illusive Man commanding Cerberus

* Shohreh Adhdashloo (sexy voice lady from FlashForward) -- Admiral Shala'Raan vas Tonbay

* Seth Green (hand in your geek card if you don't know) -- Joker

* Yvonne Strahovski (wiener lady, lust of Chuck) -- Miranda Lawson

* Adam Baldwin (a man named Jayne) -- Kal 'Reegar

* Keith David (Halo's Arbiter) -- Admiral David Anderson

* Michael Dorn (Star Trek TNG's Worf) -- Gatatog Uvenk

* Tricia Helfer (2020 Oscar winner after people stop treating her like meat) -- EDI, voice of the "new Normandy"

* Michael Hogan (Colonel Saul Tigh) -- Captain Bailey

* Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity from Matrix, singular, no sequels exist -- especially not Revolutions) -- Aria T'Loak

While I'm in a love/hate relationship with Dragon Age right now, I can't wait for ME2!

Thats a surprisingly strong voice cast. I've seen most of them do video game work before, but this is the first I've heard of Michael Hogan lending his voice to a game.

I'm looking forward to hearing Colonel Tigh in the game...

A good selection there. Martin Sheen as the Illusive man?. It's been a while since I've read the novels but I think he'll be good in the role:)

Eh. I kinda like having them in, but at the same time, having everyone recognizable as celebrities can break immersion. I also don't like having so many BSG alums.

Ugh, I REALLY hate this trend.

If Jennifer Hale wasn't in the first game, I'm sure she would have been replaced by some crappy "celebrity" voice as well.

I know they had "celebrities" in the first game, but Marina Sirtis isn't exactly top tier and I figured that Seth Green was the joke casting they did to get free PR.
But after Halo ODST? I don't have any faith in any celebrity casting anymore. That was the very definition of phoning it in.

(Exception - Keith David. While he was kind of forgettable in the first game, his distinctive bass will always win out in any situation . )

Hopefully, like the first game, the "celebrities" were only in for a few hours to do lines for the characters that were "important" but only around for a few scenes. As long as they had real voice actors play the party members, I guess I can live with it.

What, no Claudia Black? She's in every big video game now, it seems like. :p

I already knew about Seth Green and Keith David since they were in ME1, and about Strahovski since her character was revealed months ago, and I'd just read a couple days ago that Sheen would be playing the Illusive Man, but I'm liking the rest of the cast. I wonder if Lance Henriksen will be back as Admiral Hackett.

You do realize that all the new people are playing new characters who weren't in the first game (as far as I can tell from memory), some of them actually have voice acting experience in previous games, and Jennifer Hale and the male Shepherd are returning? Not sure where your complaint lies unless they completely fubar it up, and no one knows if that's the case yet.

I haven't played ODST yet, but I have a lot more faith in Bioware to not screw it up like Bungie seems to have. At least it's not the same dude doing all the male voices aside from Patrick Stewart's role (ahem, Oblivion).

I don't really see how Bungie "screwed up" in ODST. Yeah, stunt-casting not one, but three members of the Firefly cast is kind of silly, but it didn't bother me any.

And hey, there was at least one other non-Stewart male in Oblivion. Don't forget Sean Bean as Martin! ;)

I think I just treat voice acting as a profession in itself - just like how stage acting and screen acting are different enough that it takes a tremendous amount of skill to go from one to another.

So it's just lame to see these people just plop in based on their very shallow "geek cred". In ODST, Helfer and Baldwin were instantly forgettable as voice actors - and that's with Baldwin's distinctive voice.

It's why I don't mind that Nolan North is in every single game I play. He's good enough that even in the story-less Shadow Complex, he was able to make the main character more interesting than he actually was.

My thing is, if you're going to go for the celebrities, at least go for the big names with talent. I almost excuse the fact that Pixar films rely exclusively on celebrities for their voice work now because the people they use are actually good. Don't go for Helfer or Strahovski because male nerds happen to think they're hot. Yeah, Stewart stood out horribly in Oblivion (as did whatshisname in Fallout 3), but I would say that Stewart could probably out-act anyone on that list. Yes, even the honourless Worf! ;)

Like I said though, if this turns out to be a case where these people are playing minor characters that only show up briefly (Marina Sirtis as Benezia) then I can live with it. Even Keith David and Seth Green were in relatively minor roles - at least in terms of screen time. I'm staying mostly spoiler free (after they ruined one of the endings at E3 and the horrible "I'M A BADASS BIOTIC, BITCH" trailer, I've stopped looking at ME2 stuff), so I just have to assume that's the case.

I think it just bothers me because I'm sure they could have found "no name" voice actors for those roles who would have been much better.

They weren't bad - they were just bland. And in fact, seeing Fillion's face was almost distracting.

Yeah, I do think making Buck and Dare look like their respective actors was taking it a little too far.

Yeah, but that's okay because it's Yvonne Strahovski.

Though at least they changed the color of her hair.

Here's the trailer showing the cast and their roles. It has upsettingly little of Michael Hogan. :(

* Martin Sheen (Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez's dad) -- Illusive Man commanding Cerberus
I love Martin Sheen, but in the gameplay they released a few months back showing Illusive Man I felt his voice was too recognisable. I hope the game is immersive enough that I don't notice it when I come to his scenes, but as a standalone scene it was distracting.

* Keith David (Halo's Arbiter) -- Admiral David Anderson
He may be in the voice cast of half the games released this decade, but I still can't get enough of this guy's voice. :adore:

Tough I do wish people on gaming blogs would stop saying "ass to ass" whenever his name is mentioned, he didn't even say it in the movie.

I also don't like having so many BSG alums.
There's 2. :vulcan:

So long as the final missions of ME2 don't have a subplot about Captain Bailey getting the Normandy up the duff I'm fine with it.

Cool video, but I would have liked it more if they'd also shown us Mark Meer (Male Shepard), Jennifer Hale (Female Shepard), Brandon Keener (Garrus), and all the other actors voicing major characters.

ETA: Okay, I take it back, kind of. At least they showed us a few "no-name" people like Liz Sroka (Tali). Still would have liked to have at least seen the two actors playing the actual star of the game.

All I can think now when hearing Michael Hogan is "It's in the frakkin' ship!"

And I have no idea of what these games are about, but that's a great cast.
