Lost episodes of Phase II/New Voyages

Danlav05

Commodore
Commodore
over the past decade+ Cawley and co have produced but not finished the following episodes/vignettes (not counting scripts that were never filmed in the first place):

Change of Command (I guess replaced by Origins)
Auld Lang Syne
No Lesson Learned
Rand/DeSalle short
Mind Sifter (Cawley version)
Bread and Savagery
Origins: The Protracted Man (apparently back in the pipeline!)

It's a pity considering the hard work! Plus publicised unfilmed scripts include The Sky Above The World Below (Romulan episode with David Galentaux as Sarek) Kilkenny Cats, a Harry Mudd episode, First Voyages spin off, and more

Looking forward to the next one, which will probably be Torment of Destiny. Or would Bread and Savagery surprise us all?

I've always hoped (vain hope now it would seem) that Change of Command would see the light of day. It would have been a great tie-in to In Harms Way and I loved Kurt Carley as Pike!

The first thing I thought after watching that video: why would the Procounsel accept applications for military service? That's like applying to join the Army through President Obama.

It does seem odd that the Roman Empire wouldn't just draft people.

It's pure PR, designed to keep the populace convinced that the Legion is voluntary. Control the media, control the people. ;)

Nah. The Army of the Roman Republic was largely conscripted, but, during the vast majority of the Roman Empire, the army was a professional, mostly-volunteer force, with occasional conscriptions in case of emergency -- much like ours.

America's Founding Fathers, in fact, saw a professional army as a grave threat to democracy, precisely because of how the gradual professionalization of the Roman army helped erode the foundations of the Republic.

I'm sure the proconsul doesn't personally read all the applications. No doubt they go through his massive "legion" of secretaries.

Funny how there are (unrealistic) scanlines through the video of the Procounsel are different from those on the framing graphics, which exhibit video distortion completely missing on the Procounsel. Oops. ;)

Only Change of Command ever had any footage shot, the others were never filmed ever.

Is there any plan on ever completing Change of Command? It's one I'd love to see. Kurt Carley was an awesome Pike!

I never received the footage from the fellow who had the drive and I doubt any of it even still exists. The other ones never were shot as we focused our time and energy on finishing "To Serve" with Walter Koenig. I am working on "Origins" in my own spare time. It requires massive work due to many unforeseen difficulties we endured at the time it was being made. I do believe it will get finished. There are plans for "Bread and Savagery" but we are not ready to make them public yet.

I would love to see the original version of Mind Sifter. I really have a hard time with Brian Gross as Kirk. In general it gives me a brand new appreciation for Cawley's Kirk. Recently I saw the directors cut of To Serve All My Days, and Cawley's presence really stands out in that episode. By far the best NV episode I have seen, and completely reminds me of why I loved the series so much when I first found it. The last few episodes have been very lackluster.

I know its a big taboo around here, but I've always been really curious about Vic's cut of Kitumba (or even, the fancut that trimmed it down some.) My favorite version of Trek 5 is the one that fanedits it into a standard episode, so I guess I just appreciate what good pacing and cuts can do to a script.

When we shot "Mind-Sifter" the first time, we only got about half of the episode shot. While the Enterprise with Captain Spock and a sad and grumpy McCoy and Scotty try to hold the a Enterprise together without Captain Kirk, Kirk is stuck in the past.

But we only shot the Enterprise stuff. We never got around to shooting any of the 1950s psych facility stuff--until we got a whole new script two years later.

So, the original "Mind-Sifter" was only half an episode.

It would still be nice to see the Enterprise stuff, then, but I guess there isn't too much lost footage of the Cawley-Kirk from that episode to begin with.

Maybe some type of clip show or documentary discussing the production, where you get to cut to all the rare footage could work.... it would be a shame to never see any of it, even if its not in an official episode.

^I would love to see that kind of thing. Or even a general "Behind the scenes of the series so far" special. I appreciate it would be a lot of work, but if you don't ask... ;)

I totally agree.
I also would be very interested about seeing even parts of that (not aired) episode.

There are actually three scenes cut together and up on YouTube on James' channel from the original Mind Sifter, one of them showing Kirk with the Klingons. But they are set to "private" and I sincerely doubt that will ever change. They're on my YT channel too, but out of respect for James, I won't share those clips without his permission either. You could ask him, but I believe he would consider them as disrespectful to the new writer and the new actors.

How would it be disrespectful? We got the episode as he intended. There is a reason DVDs have deleted and alternate scenes. They don't have to be canon to be enjoyable. What about disrepect to the *old* writers and actors, who did the work that never will see the light of day?

Or you can just move on, and accept the final product as being what James Cawley intended to release to the public, and leave it at that. Cawley seems to be the type of producer who is very thorough, in terms of the level of professionalism he wants to emit. You should respect that by not badgering him to release uncut, unpolished materials if he doesn't want to.
