Apparentally it's an international co-production, and will have a reality show to determine who will play the Knight Sabers. Only a $30 million budget though.

Bubblegum Crisis was a popular 80s OAV (Original Animated video-direct-to-video anime) series that was kind of a mix of Blade Runner, Terminator, Streets of Fire, and Gatchaman. Basically, four women from different walks of life (The "Knight Sabers") suited up in robotic suits to battle the evil corporation Genom and the rogue robots known as "Boomers". Personally, the series was my introduction to anime. It was followed by a second OAV series, Bubblegum Crash, and later a TV series, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, which updated the concept for the 00's.

But the budget and the reality show idea doesn't exactly fill me with confidence for this project. Anime adaptations haven't been particuarly well-done so far, as the failure of Speed Racer and Dragonball has proved.

Sounds like it's going to be a disaster, the more studios involved with a film the more chances of something going wrong and the deal falling through. I wonder if they'll go for adapting the original BGC or the Tokyo 2040 verse.

I've given up all hope for the Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2041 project promised to us by ADV way back in the day, this might be the only way to get new BGC. :(

Well, this... doesn't fill me with confidence. I was a big BGC fan (possibly still am, let's see how quickly the nerd rage rises as I hear more about the project!) and the idea of doing a futuristic (expensive) epic (expensive) featuring heroines in high-tech battlesuits (expensive) fighting (expensive) robots (expensive) doesn't quite mesh with a $30m budget.

Just for comparison's sake, DOA: Dead Or Alive had a $21m budget, and of the above featured only heroines and fighting. Ultraviolet had a $30m budget, added 'futuristic' to the feature list (and skimped on the fighting), and sucked. Aeon Flux added 'high-tech' (but didn't quite stretch to the 'battlesuits'), cost $62m, and sucked.

I think Priss, Sylia, Linna and Nene stand a good chance of being badly served by going live-action. Just a hunch.

Some more news:

Most of that is similar to the above posted article aside from this bit:

The US$30-million project is planned for worldwide release by early 2012. The producers are negotiating for the director and cast, who will shoot the film in Australia. A spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter newspaper that the cast will "feature two male leads and a quartet of female action babes — two Caucasian and two Asian." Mokko Studio, a partner studio of Wizzfilms with Oscar-winning animation director Anthony LaMolinara (Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2), has agreed to do the post-production work in Canada. AIC and Cubix said in 2008 that they intend to consult with former ARTMIC staffers Shinji Aramaki (screenplay and mechanical design) and Kenichi Sonoda (character design) to maintain a connection with the world concepts of the original series.

If this had been done many years ago staring Sigorney Weaver, Lucy Lawless, Uma Thurman, and Michelle Yeoh, it would have been awesome.

A movie like this needs female leads with a certain AQ, asskickery quotient.

Well, 3 anyway, one needs to be the quirky, clumsy, tech/hacking goddess Nene, who's not much good in a fight. :)

Also another of them needs to be able to sing.
