Legend of the Seeker cancelled?

Is Legend of the Seeker cancelled? The situation certainly isn't good for the fantasy series, though its ultimate fate remains unclear.

KSiteTV has noted that Tribune Company is informing Seeker fans that, "Seeker's ratings do not merit renewing it," and that they won't be bringing the show back for a third season.

Legend of the Seeker is produced by ABC Studios, but airs in syndication, sold to local stations across the country. However, TVBytheNumbers.com notes that Tribune apparently owns most, if not all, of the stations the series airs on -- likely purchasing it as a package, to air across the country on various Tribune channels. So Tribune not renewing it is almost the same as if it were airing on a major network who cancelled it.

What's unknown yet is if ABC Domestic Television, who distribute the show, might look to other non-Tribune stations across the country to air Legend of the Seeker, or if this definitively marks the end of the series. We'll keep you updated on the situation.

Bastards! This show has become a guilty pleasure for me.

I wouldn't count it out yet.

Since the show is syndicated, all this means is Tribune Company won't be carrying it on their owned stations. The show is no doubt televised by other companies across the company. Give the producers time to shop it to other stations before giving up.

ABC probably will have to start selling the show to local stations on an individual basis now. It my hometown, it was sold that way and has been running on a non-Tribune station from the start. If they can clear enough stations, hopefully Seeker can continue for a third season. It's one of the few shows I watch on the weekends and reminds me of the '90s, when first-run syndicated action shows were fairly common.

The impression I've got from IGN is that there may not be enough non-Tribune stations out there to support a 3rd season pickup.

Time to unleash some Banelings on Tribune.

The Tribune arrangement got them coverage in several of the top twenty markets, including NYC, LA and Chicago. I know in the Chicago market there are at least four other independent stations where the show can be sold.

The place the show can hurt is that is also ran on Superstation WGN. The loss of that additional coverage can really hurt the show.

I'll keep watching it if it gets another season but I won't be crushed if it doesn't get one.

I've learned to accept all the changes they've made to the story and to take the show for what it is, but I still can't shake the constant feeling that the story isn't quite right and it has held me back from really getting into the show.

I love the show and it really has been the first show since Trek went off the air that brought that same sort of feel and charm that Trek did plus it didn't hurt that being in syndication airing on Saturday evenings brought back fond memories of catching TNG in syndication years and years ago.

I think it is a charming little fantasy show with a great cast, some wonderfully entertaining characters and a rather consistent track record in terms of weekly episode quality. I never read the books the series is based on but this show grabbed me right from the start. Unlike other fantasy or sci-fi shows it has just the right mix of drama, grounded comedy, arcs and thankfully doesn't veer into camp which I can't stand.

Right now it is my second favorite sff show behind LOST. I hope it isn't canned.

It's always interesting to get the POV of someone who has not read the books. :techman:

Odd, i thought that the ratings were pretty decent from the threads we've seen on it. Considering the times it airs (saturday night, usually 8pm or later) not sure what kind of ratings they were expecting anyway?

It's been a decent show, would be sorry to see it go, even if it's strayed from the books in a lot of areas...

That would really suck as I enjoy this show a ton. Goo fantasy storytelling. I actually like this version of Richard Rahl and Kahlan better than the book versions as the book versions (currently reading the series again and am at temple of the Winds) are both self absrobed whiny assholes. Also, can't get enough of watching Bridget Regen walking around in thigh highs and Tabrett Bethell in her red leather!! :>)) Though I wish they would have Bethell wear the full neck with long ponytail more as that looks is oh so hot!! :>))

I've read most of em and reading them through again has really soured me on the book versions of their characters. Especially Richard who I find myself liking less and less the more I read.

I would miss it. Richard with his shirt off is reason enough to get me to tune in.

they only have themselves to blame.... if they would have stuck to plot's closer to the book instead of going of on left tangents, i think they woulda done a lot better.

I doubt it. They've definitely made some odd, and not really needed, story changes, but it's been generally entertaining. And as mentioned, the characters of Richard and Kahlan in the tv show are VAST improvements over their book counterparts. In the books, they're both whiny, moody, and often go into angst mode over each other, or instant distrust, at the drop of a hat. Richard is also a total asshole know-it-all, and self-righteous in the extreme. The TV characters are a welcome improvement, and closer to how they were introducced to us in the first book, before they started getting wonky...

I doubt if many viewers actually care if the series stuck to the story in the books or not.

As someone who hadn't heard of the book until I watched the series, I certainly didn't. And if the show was/is going to be successful, it would have to appeal to the non-book-seeker viewers, who would vastly outnumber the people who read the books.

I gotta say, Legend of the Seeker has been a solidly entertaining (if not altogether profound) show. It has a lot more going for it in terms of characters and story than many shows out there and I'd definitely miss it if it were to be canceled (and thanks to Mike Sussman for letting us know that nothing is official about cancellation). Honestly, I really believe that this show is maturing nicely. The past few episodes have really shown quite a bit of promise. And there's lots of potential left for the series.

And, for the record, I've read Wizard's First Rule and about a hundred pages of The Stone of Tears and really like the TV adaptation of the characters and stories.
