Criminal Intent will return on May 1 with eight final episodes. Kathryn Erbe and Vincent D'Onofrio would be returning to their roles as Alexandra Eames and Robert Goren for the final season.

Jay O. Sanders will be joining the cast as Captain William Hannah, the new Major Case Squad commanding officer.

Chris Brancato takes over as show runner and executive producer. Brancato was the creator of First Wave wrote the X-Files episode Eve - one of my favorites.

Two well-known stars will be appearing in episodes - Jeri Ryan (some girl from Voyager) and Neal McDonough (Hawk from First Contact, Minority Report, Boomtown, etc.)

He was in "Dead", the one about the guy who wasn't burning bodies at the crematorium. This is one of my favorite episodes, partly because it was based on the Brent Marsh case that happened about 15 minutes from me house. We used to drive by the crime scene! Also in two episodes of the original series. Didn't realize that. :techman:

Meh, I've stopped worrying about people being in earlier episodes or incarnations of Law & Order series becoming regular cast. Jerry Orbach guested as a lawyer before he was Lennie Briscoe, Diane Neal was a suspect before she was Casey Novak, Annie Parisse was a suspect before she was Alexandra Borgia. It's all good.

Looking forward to seeing how they do this season, knowing it'll be the last.

Wonder if we'll get an explaintion of how Goren and Eames are back or whether they'll pretend the last few minutes of the last ep of the last seaon never happened.

Umm... did you forget about the whole season 9 where neither one of them were there?

They left at the end of season 8.

Yes actually I did.

Okay will they pretend the last few minutes of season 8 never happened? :)

As I understand it, Nichols gets a passing mention and a good chunk of the first episode is dedicated to the return of Eames and Goren.

Then there's the Conviction regulars that then became regulars on the other shows. Milena Govich (Jessica Rossi) became Nina Cassidy on the original Law & Order. Julianne Nicholson (Christina Finn) became Megan Wheeler on Criminal Intent.

I can't wait to see the final season. I missed Goren and Eames so much. Jeff Goldblum's Zach Nichols was a good character but only in good amounts. Not most of an entire season. And his partner wasn't that memorable unlike Wheeler. I look forward to whatever explanation they'll come up with for Goren and Eames' return. I'm very interested in the subplot of Goren having sessions with a psychologist to explore his issues. I wonder where it'll be leading towards.

We can also extend this to other shows that exist in the same universe as Law & Order, such as Homicide: LOTS. D'Onofrio, Erbe, and others guested on Homicide as different characters. ;)

I think an eleventh season is inevitable at this point. 11x01 scored 5.10 million viewers and the second episode had 3.68 million. Both were higher than anything last year and are very respectable for cable.

Dropping 1.5 million viewers from week 1 to week 2 isn't great, though -- and 3.6 million was the average of season 9, which rendered the show comatose until the deal with D'Onofrio and Erbe was struck.

Given the expense of the show, I wouldn't call anything inevitable at this point, especially if it experiences another large drop in viewers.

It gained viewers to 3.83 million. It'll probably hold steady there. Almost as many viewers as LA had on the mothership.

Do you know something I don't? AFAIK, CI's tenth season has been confirmed to be its last. I wasn't aware of any possibility that it could be renewed or picked up by another network. In fact I suspect that the main reason D'Onofrio and Erbe came back in the first place was to give the show a proper sendoff...

The showrunner has said he hopes it gets picked back up. I don't have the link handy. I think it's certainly a possibility if it continues to do well.
