News Killjoys and Ant-Man and the Wasp's Hannah John-Kamen to Play Red Sonja in New Movie

Consequences for MCU projects?

Were there announcements re: John-Kamen's role - if any - in Quantumania?

No, we hadn't heard anything about her being in Quantumania one way or the other. And this project doesn't necessarily preclude her from being in it.

I've been waiting for Hollywood to finally see her star potential. Now, the only problem with this is completely personal, as up to now she'd been my head-canon casting for Bêlit.

Slight correction of the Variety article, "The Red Sonja and Conan comics eventually left Marvel and landed at Dynamite Entertainment", while Red Sonja went to Dynamite, the Conan licence went to Dark Horse before returning to Marvel just a few years ago.

This will only be Soloway's second feature film, and first genre production. I haven't seen their first movie, and neither have I seen Transparent, though I did see all of Six Feet Under and Dirty Sexy Money back in the day, so I must have seen their episodes.

She was good in Ant Man & Wasp and great in Killjoys, but seems really small for Red Sonja. Then again I was one of the ones who raised an eyebrow at Gal Gadots thin frame when she was cast as Wonder Woman, so what do I know?

Great, another Diversity replacement of a Red Head character.. Blah.
Plenty of redheads out there..
Rose Leslie from GOT
Eleanor Tomlinson from Poldark
Rachel Hurd Wood
Etc. Etc....

Liked her in Ant Man, but with a no name director and writer, this seems to be going the 2011 Conan reboot that went nowhere with Jason Momoa. or the Hellboy reboot.. crappy cgi, bad writing.. etc.

But have hope for a good movie though I could be wrong!

They just cast her, so there should be plenty of time if they want her to put on more muscle.

She already has a good frame, so there is no worry.

Maybe her being small was in regard to her height? She's 5'6, but we all know there are workarounds in film.

Is there anything in the comics that indicates she has to be tall?

None at all. And she's been depicted physically anywhere from va-va-voom curvy to needs-a-sandwich petite, depending on the artist drawing her.

I like her a lot, but I never thought of her for Red Sonya. Well, as long as they give her red hair, which is kind of important to the character, my mind is otherwise open.

I don't know the character well but I think of her with a fierce expression which I don't with Hannah John-Kamen. It'll be interesting to see how she pulls it off.

Like others have said, as long as they dye her hair red (or give her a good wig), I'm fine with the casting (Red Sonja without her red hair would be really lame, and I'm pretty sure the characters hair is why she's even referred to as "Red" Sonja). I think that Ghost is the single worst villain in the MCU, but I don't blame the actress for that.

I don't have too much faith in the movie being particularly good, though. Gail Simone's Red Sonja is the only version of Sonja, or the Conan the Barbarian universe in general, that I not only didn't hate but actually loved. In every other circumstance I've always thought that Conan and related stuff was some of the worst shit that was inexplicably popular, just toxic masculinity in human form (Conan) or generic sexy barbarian with no personality (Red Sonja). Gail Simone did something great with Sonja, but literally no one else ever has in my opinion (not even her creator Roy Thomas, and I say that as a HUGE Roy Thomas fan).

Still, regardless of the movie's quality, this is decent casting, assuming they put a bit of effort into the hair (that quick photoshop above looking pretty decent).

Brigitte Nielsen, the original cinematic Red Sonja, was naturally blonde. Very few people who've played redheaded comics characters are natural redheads -- Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane Watson) is blonde, Famke Janssen (Jean Gray) is brunette, Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) has naturally chestnut-brown hair. Ben Affleck dyed his brown hair red to play Daredevil, and KJ Apa dyes his to play Archie Andrews. Conversely, the naturally redheaded Bryce Dallas Howard dyed her hair blonde as Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3, opposite the blonde-dyed-red Dunst.

So this is a silly objection. Very few screen blondes or redheads are naturally that color. Both colors are quite rare in real life; no more than 5% of Americans are naturally blonde, and no more than 1-1.5% of Americans are naturally red-haired (about the same as the percentage of Americans who have non-binary gender, I read recently). So odds are that any redhead you see onscreen is not that color by birth. (And for what it's worth, there are some naturally redheaded black people, though not many.)

Really? Wow. I guess you didn't see her in Killjoys. She does fierce extremely well. She's a fantastic action heroine, a fantastically good actress, and a fantastically gorgeous woman. She's a superb choice for this in every respect except the most superficial.

I was a very casual watcher of Killjoys, I've seen it a handful of times here and there. She always seemed to be a cool, collected type to me, but I am certainly not authoritative on this.

Trust me, she had far more layers than that. The whole series is worth watching (well, certainly the first three seasons, though it loses focus to an extent in the last two).
