Kes' screaming in "Cold Fire" is *horrible*

I saw "Cold Fire" again last night. The episode was alright, but OMG Kes' screaming wasn't. It's like nails on a chalkboard. I don't think I've ever heard a scream that horrible before.

I liked the blood dripping on Janeway's shoulder. The technobabble (the words "spore" and "cyst" combine to make something really stupid) was OTT, as usual. Cysperia's (sp?) brood of Ocampa and space station in the middle of nowhere were never really explained. She wanted to get away from Banjoman and his boring, stationary world and station so she...sets up a smaller stationary station elsewhere? A big city ship cruising through the cosmos would have made more sense.

Once Cysperia left, they never even tried to investigate the station - when the similar one in "Caretaker" could have gotten them back!

I think they should have had Kes keep some of her powers - a pyrokinetic crewperson would certainly come in handy every now and then! (Janeway: "I suggest you surrender. Kes does not have a stun setting!")

The station was full of Ocampia with powers equal to that of Kes(who has powerrs like the X-Men's Dark Phoenix!!) and we just tried to stun their "god". I don't think investigating the station would have been a wise choice at that point. They weren't going to be very happy campers at that point. The best thing Janeway could do was get out of there before the Ocampa take Voyager apart, molecule by molecule.

^True, but would the Ocampa have kept their powers while Cysperia was gone? Kes lost hers, and Tannis seemed pretty helpless once Cysperia was stunned.

Kes was boiling Tannis blood, that's why I figured he was helpless.

Honestly, I don't think Kes lost her powers as much as repressed them due to her fear & inexperance using them. She did show she still had them before & in eps after "Coldfire" like "Basics" & "Warlord".

I think its Suspiria.
Anyway, yes, it does indeed seem that Jennifer Lien has an awful scream that is actually comical in nature. Her scream returns in Scorpion Part 2 little improved.
The episode was also poorly conceived and filmed, a big letdown considering the second caretaker was supposed to be a major thing, but this is Voyager.

I don't know, I found it kinda cool watching Kes have an orgasm over the fact she killed all the plants by burning them up.

Phoenix hungers!!

I don't understand the criticizm to Kes's scream. Believe me, I've heard far, far worse things by more merited actresses in certain movies.

As for Kes's powers, they were the result of Tanis's control over her. She lost most of them when Tanis left the ship.

Kes killing the flowers was also a result of Tanis's manipulations in order to get control over her. In the long run she was strong enough to withstand his evil manipulations and she saved the ship and the crew as well.

One good scene does not make a good episode. Besides, the airponics bay was a laughable set.

i guess constance goodheart of the chaotica episodes topped that.

Speak for yourself.
It was good enough for me. ;)

She didn't loose them because she had them in "Warlord", which was after "Coldfire".

She lost most of her powers after Tanis left the ship. We never saw her boil tea with her powers or something like that. She tried at the end of "Cold Fire" but couldn't.

As for the powers she showed in "Warlord", they were more and less the same as she did show in "Persistence Of Vision" when she saved the ship by using her powers on the Bothan.

As for "Cold Fire", it's my favorite episode. :techman:

OK, there's no way anything in that episode was worse than this:

[yt]<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/xR0ZFmhFAO0?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xR0ZFmhFAO0?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>[/yt]

I like how at one point the scream is at the same frequency as the energy weapon.

Given my username, I'm tempted to ask you if I can use this for my sig. ;)

I think it was a mistake not to keep developing Kes' powers as part of an ongoing plot and if it led us to a Dark Phoenix style climax, so much the better. It was certainly the most interesting aspect of her character and it would have made her departure more exciting and fitting if it had been the culmination of the thread - preferably during Year of Hell as a result of exposure to the temporal energies.

Powers is powers too me, regardless of how she uses them.

Yes, IMO "Coldfire" is one of the better Kes eps.

First off, Tannis likely enhanced Kes's ability to access mental abilities he trained her in.

What we saw in 'Persistence of Vision' was Kes mentally reflecting the alien's illusion back at him, not starting a reaction in the body resulting in severe pain and bleeding.

In 'Warlord' it was more consistent with what she did to Tuvok in 'Coldfire' with Tannis.
I think it's entirely possible that Kes retained at least a portion of what Tannis taught her after his departure, but suppressed it initially due to fear.
It wasn't until Tuvok told her at the end of 'Coldfire' that began to understand that such powers, while they could be dangerous, with adequate control, she can use them safely (and indeed, I think we've seen her continue training with Tuvok at the end).

So it's entirely possible that by the time 'Warlord' kicked in, she began to tap into those abilities with greater control than before.
And also ... in 'Warlord', Tieran's conscience was exploring her brain and discovered those abilities.
Most likely, he learned how to explore a persons mind with a limited degree to assess just how willing the host was to accept him and ensure dominance over the body.
Tieran probably examined Kes's memories of how she tapped into those abilities and managed to reproduce the effect.
