Apologies if this has already been posted...

Katy Perry has expressed a desire to move away from pop as she reaches her thirties, saying her follow-up to Prism will likely ‘be more of an acoustic guitar album’.
The 28-year-old has had huge success with her latest single Roar, which soared to the top of the charts around the world.

‘I’ll probably turn into more of a Joni Mitchell,’ she told Billboard in an interview. ‘As I inch towards my 30s, I think my fourth record will be more of an acoustic guitar album.

What she should really do is embrace her inner Marvin Gaye and make a record similar to his magnum opus, What's Going On instead.

Good luck to her, but comparing oneself to one of the all-time greatest folk singer-songwriters is maybe not the best approach.

^So can she, otherwise she wouldn't have gotten this far.

Nope. She's a pretty girl with a great sense of showmanship whose producers know how to use auto tune. And even then some of the notes she tries to hit are painful (I'm thinking of the way her voice flattens out awkwardly during the chorus of "fireworks" for example).

No, she can sing well without auto tune.
Here she is singing live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ_dgDgoua0

Believe me, I am a bastard when it comes to people who can't sing. If you sing poorly, I will say so.

For the time being, I'm just content with hearing the contents of 'Prism' about a month from now. I suspect the degree of success of this CD will greatly determine the direction of the fourth.

I don't think Perry is a particularly good singer but I'm always for artists branching out and trying new things.

Remind me never to sing in front of you.

As for folk, well, Led Zep did it for LZIII. Some singers and bands do it at some point. Can't hurt.

At least she's not returning to Christian Rock.

Yes. Aside from being at least as creatively bankrupt as most forms of pop music, it caters to a much more limited audience. Wouldn't be an especially good career move. Folk music, on the other hand... It may not be for everybody, but it's worth a shot. I wish her luck.

For some reason, I reminded of the episode of "South Park" where Cartman starts a Christian rock band by simply taking vague generic pop love ballads and changing references like "baby" to "Jesus" ("Ooh, Jesus, I love your way…")

That being said, a Katy Perry Christian Rock album where she remade the "South Park" songs would probably be a million seller ("I want to get down on my knees and start pleasing Jesus. I want to feel his salvation all over my face.") ;)
