Kate Mulgrew's sublime voice

Her voice as Janeway only got richer, deeper, fuller of timbre, and more satisfying over time... It's absolutely one of the great pleasures of her performance and star persona.

Anyone else agree? In other words, I cant believe some folks dont like it!

Well, it is a smoker's voice. The Betty Boothroyd School of Acting*

*First female Speaker in the British House of Commons, and credited her vocal gravitas to her smoking.

I gotta admit, one of the very, very few things I like about Voyager is Mulgrews voice.
Every captain should have a badass voice like that.

I didn't care for it early on. I liked it as the show progressed but if you listen to Caretaker and then listen to Endgame there's no contest; one sounds like nails on a chalk board mating with a car accident and the other sounds.... well, less like that.

As it goes I'm just glad they didn't give the role to that other woman that had the part first. Her voice was terri-bad. And her face looked like an old catchers mitt.

Actually, if youre referring to Genevieve Bujold, she's a great actress with a lovely voice. (Catch her in the 70s film OBSESSION to see how good she can be.) She was just exceptionally miscast in the Janeway role.

I've never seen Bujold other than the initial VOY readings she did. In those, she was so incredibly flat.

And Janeway's voice is ah...distinct, I'll give you that.

I love Kate Mulgrew's voice. Between her voice and facial features, she reminds me very much of Katherine Hepburn.

Re: being fair to Bujold, the woman IS something like 14 years older the Mulgrew.

As for Mulgrew's voice, I think it "improved" the longer she had the role. She stopped "trying to be" the Captain, and just herself shine through Janeway. Her voice matured with experience, that one doesn't have to bark to be heard. A well placed growl... "Lieutenant!" just crawled up from her gut when she was warning B'Elanna not to cooperated with the killer robots in "Prototype" and B'Elanna caught its every nuance.

Her voice is one of the things I truly loved about Janeway, the other was mentioned on another board. She had the most amazing ability to slouch with superb self confidence in the Captain's chair even when the ship was at red alert!

I totally disagree with everything in the OP.

I didn't watch Voyager til years after it went off the air because the few times I saw it while it was airing, I couldn't stand Janeway's voice. IMO her voice always sounded like she was addicted to constantly inhaling helium.

Over time I've learned to tolerate it, but I chalk that up to desensitization rather than that she has a good voice.

I love her voice and think it contributed greatly to the role. Mulgrew as Hepburn seems muy simpatico!

When I started watching Voyager I only knew the German version. I didn't know Mulgrew's voice. Then I watched some Voyager clips on the internet and that was the first time I heard her voice. It was...strange at first. But after I bought the dvds and the longer I watched the original episodes of Voyager the more I liked her voice. And now, whenever I watch/hear an interview that Kate did I can't stop listening because her voice gives me goosebumps. I can't stand watching the episodes in German anymore  Love her voice :adore:

I still have the Omni magazine that talked about the new Star trek series premiering that winter. The author described the new ship as being captained by "Katharine Hepburn".

Naturally, that description hooked me before I ever saw a single episode. :-)

I always did think that Kate Mulgrew reminded me greatly of Katherine Hepburn. She even had her looks as well as her pretty face and taut figure! It was quite creepy and she really looked like her a great deal.

About her voice: I must admit in the beginning her voice grated on me because she sounded like a barking dog giving out orders. Then I thought, well maybe her bun is on too tight or something? LOL! But as the years wore on, I really liked her voice much better because she deepened as a character and seemed more relaxed on the bridge.

Indeed. I didn't like her voice much to start with, but it's certainly grown on me. Very distinctive at any rate!

Like others here, I also thought Janeway's voice was irritating...at first. Now of course I think it is wonderful! I guess it's a voice that grows on you.

Hmm. I'll start off by saying that Janeway is probably my favorite Star Trek captain. Mulgrew's acting performance is very good indeed.

Her voice however... well, it's a two-fold thing. It goes from ear-grinding at times to silky-smooth and very pleasant. It's amazing how much it can change according to what the situation/scene calls for. I'd prefer her command voice to not be so heavy on the ears, but overall it works out, and by no means mars Mulgrew's acting as a whole, voice and otherwise.
