Kai Winn actress Louise Fletcher passed away at 88

She was in an episode of Brimstone I watched earlier this year (from 1998) and she played the mother of an antagonist of the main character, whose horrible actions had set the series in motion and had returned from hell to commit more heinous crimes. But she played it as such a nice and genuine mother who thought God had returned her dead son to her and was just so happy to have him back in her life, and in the end I liked how Stone let her keep believing that when he was killed the second time he was sent to heaven.

My wife and I have been rewatching Deep Space Nine and are looking forward to the episodes where Kai Winn shows up. Absolutely fantastic performance from
Louise Fletcher in that role. It's so sad to think that she's gone, but what a talent!

Here's her acceptance speech for her Oscar, which is such a lovely and genuine moment, especially when she signs to her deaf parents her thanks:

RIP, Eminence.

Once at work, I was pleasantly but firmly dealing with some asshole. Afterwords, some co-workers told me they always marveled at how well I dealt with jerks -- my affect was always nice, yet clearly not taking any shit. They themselves felt like they always got notably annoyed, or they let themselves get pushed around. They asked what was my secret?

And it was not till that moment I realized I had actually modeled my tactic for dealing with assholes on Kai Winn. It is truly the best way to respond when you must interface with someone nasty. Except, don't actually call anyone "child." :bolian:

Thanks Louise for providing such a good model of how to deal with the dickheads of the world!

I read an obit that said "she never reached the heights of 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' again." Clearly no DS9 viewers were involved in putting that together.

When I met her in an interview line, 22 years ago, i think I surprised her when I didn't thank her for her role as Kai WInn or Nurse Ratched. Instead I thanked her for the heartfelt Oscar acceptance she signed to her parents during the 1976 award show.

Peace to her and solace to her family.

I just heard about this on Good Morning America this morning. Kai Winn was one of my favorite characters on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I know she was a villain the fandom loved to hate but I liked her and Louise Fletcher was great in the role, albeit she only had 14 episodes of the 176 episodes of the show to portray the character, she still did a great job with it. Now I'm bummed because I never got to meet her at any cons and now I never will. At least she's up there with Nog, Odo, Uhura, and Spock...

Rest in Paradise, Louise.

^She made such a powerful impression that it's hard to believe she was only in 14 episodes, especially when you consider most of those were at the end of the series.

At the time I remember being shocked that she showed up again after "In the Hands of the Prophets" given she'd been linked to murder and attempted murder, even if apparently it couldn't be proven (I'm guessing Neela(?) never incriminated her).

In this day and age...I'm a bit less shocked...
