Jar Jar on trial for war crimes.

First, THIS IS NOT a thread for bashing the prequals or even Jar Jar's character. But, consider this.

In Attack of the Clones, Jar Jar is tricked into calling for the vote to give Palpatine his emergency powers which lead to the legalization of the clone army. One thing leads to another, and he becomes emperor. Empire takes comand, totalitarian governement, countless attrocities, blown up Alderaan...You know the rest.

Flash ahead 20 years or so, the Empire is defeated. There must have been the trials for war crimes that had happened leading up to, and including the reign of the Empire.

Would Jar Jar - assuming he's still alive (my son INSISTS that it's HIS voice we hear at the end of the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi shouting "Wesa Free!") be brought on trial for helping Palpatine gain power? Sure he was manipulated, but he was also a politician. We assume our politicians are more savvy than to let that happen.

Your thoughts?

I'm sure Jar Jar probably has access to a legal team consisting of Naboo's best lawyers, Gungan or otherwise. So even if he went on trial, he would get off on any accused war crime.

On a related note, has the EU ever gone into detail about Jar Jar's fate after ROTS? Was he still around in the original trilogy? Was that indeed him at the end of the DVD version of ROTJ?

As much as people hate Jar-Jar I don't think he can be held responsible for everything Palpatine did. No one at the time knew Palps was actually the one pulling the strings. Jar-Jar would be nothing more than a scapegoat.

Yeah, exactly. All he did was call for a vote. He can't be held responsible for Palpatine's later actions. By that logic you would also have to hold all the senators responsible that voted to give Palpatine the extra powers. And that wouldn't make sense.

You would have to prove that Jar Jar had some knowledge beforehand that Palpatine would abuse the power and since he's clueless about just about everything there would be no proof.

Yeah, I don't think anyone could seriously bring up charges against Jar Jar.

On the Other hand: Captain Panaka from Episode 1, eventually rose to the rank of Moff in the Galactic Empire.

As much as I detest the PT, I always thought having JarJar cast that vote was a little bone tossed by GL to those of us who hated the character so much. About the only nice thing I have to say about him and the PT. :D

Actually, that's like charging the owner of a gun store with aiding and abetting after one of his customers has committed a murder... despite the fact that the buyer of the gun had no prior criminal record and gave no indication that he intended to commit a crime.

I don't think even the EU writers care enough to write anything about Jar Jar

The game "Star Wars Galaxies" and some other stuff deals with the fates of Naboo. Padme's relatives eventually represent Naboo in the senate, although they are unaware of their connection to Luke & Leia until much later.

Boss Nass leads a Rebel cell on Naboo. Panaka, who was a supporter of Palpatine in TPM, eventually becomes a Moff, as mentioned earlier.

As for the "Wesa free" it's not Ahmed Best but actually Matthew Wood (Who played Bib Fortuna and the voice of General Grievous in the prequels).

Funny thing about Jar-Jar, in earlier versions of AOTC's script he actually matured and learned better english, but ocassionally lapsed into his old way of speaking. There was also a brief scene in SITH written for him that was cut, leaving only the cameos we got in the finished film.

Everyone who had an iota of power in the Republic needs to go on trial for extreme incompetence, stupidity and dereliction of duty. And George Lucas should go on trial for crimes against humanity for writing, directing and producing the PT. But war crimes would be a bit of a stretch. :rommie:

And was acting so suspiciously that anyone with two brain cells to rub together should have known something was up. But hey, gun store owners do take that attitude, don't they? Just because somebody waltzes in acting like he should be in a straightjacket doesn't mean I need to take any responsibility for selling him deadly weapons.

As much as people hate Jar-Jar I don't think he can be held responsible for everything Palpatine did.
Whichever idiots actually arranged for an obvious moron like Jar-Jar to have any power whatsover are responsible. I guess that's the people of Naboo and the rest of the Senate.

The blame can be spread across a very large swath. The PT couldn't have happened unless we assume that everyone in the power in the Republic, politicians and Jedi alike, are utterly incompetent at their jobs. The only competent person in that mess was Palps, so why shouldn't he win? Makes it hard to feel sorry for the Republic falling. Fucking well deserved it.

jar jar can't be held responsible for hsi actions .as far as jar jar being alive if you play the force unleashed there is a scene on khyashky were starkiller his hunting an imperial commander . the commander has a trophy room and in the room frozen in carbornite is jar jar . and the force unleash is considered cannon. But the jedi also wanted the vote as well .

Jar Jar has friends among the Jedi. "This is not the war criminal you are looking for."

I think you should check the "tongue in cheek" idiom in some dictionary...

Exactly. I hate Binks as much as the next guy, and even I can see this.

Was von Papen on trial at Nuremberg because he allowed Hitler to take power, or because he continued working in the Nazi regime? The answer to that answers the thread.

I do wonder, though, how easy would it be to try and divert blame to Jar Jar to take blame away from themselves?

Very good points, all. But I still don't like Jar Jar.
Careful there, hombre - you're about to open the floodgates of prequel-bashing you asked others to abstain from in your OP. ;)

There is NO Naboo appearance in ROTJ!! :klingon: :klingon:

Are there any fics where Jar Jar gets soundly thrashed about the head and neck with an Ewok's leg for no apparent reason? And if not, why not?
