I know nothing of the musical direction of ST11. You don't want to go too retro. But it's not too late to tweak the soundtrack.

PTB hear this: the bongos are what held together the TOS theme! They may have been congas, but they sound pretty high and tuned to a 5th so I'm guessing bongos.
Latin percussion. Never goes out of style, always makes the music cooler.
