Is Lady Gaga as big as the Beatles?

I remember Beatlemania circa 1964 through 1970. Do you think Lady Gaga has achieved a similar level of international pop culture stardom?

She's only one and they were a group of four, but still. I'm thinking she's as famous as the Beatles in their heyday and is working on becoming just as rich.

Comparing The Beatles to Lady Gag Gag is like comparing Champagne to piss, with the Beatles (Champagne) winning by far.
Lady Gag Gag is over rated and only helped by technological advances is the studio.
I bet she sounds like William Hung (American Idol) with out them.

I don't know if she'll reach Beatles status, but she is quickly becoming more than just a household name. I expect she'll continue growing in popularity and artistry, so perhaps one day she will. We'll have to wait and see.

I'm not a huge fan of Lady GaGa, but even I know that's hardly true.

As for the original question, I think the answer is pretty clearly no, but I think it is fair to compare her to someone like Madonna. She really tends to play with how modern pop music tends to work and then combines it with an ability to command media attention.

True. She even talks about Madonna being a large part of her inspiration and influence, so if she turns out to be famous like Madonna, then hey, that's still a hell of an achievement!

I love Lady Gaga, she's easily going to be or is Madonna status in popularity. However there is no way this compares to mania of the Beatles.

Also pfft to those who say Lady Gaga can't sing.

The whole "can't sing/can't play/studio magic" commentary is usually made by people who reflexively don't like her, or they've just listened to what others who don't like her have to say. One can dislike her genre of music, but to say she can't sing or play, well, either that person is being a knee jerk reactionary, or is tone deaf.

Nowhere near Beatles status. The Beatles are a legend. Lady Gaga is, at this point, a fad. Only time will tell if she improves her status with some real staying power (and by 'staying power' I mean 'several years with several successful records' - not just a few in the space of a few years).

I'm not holding my breath. Too much gimmick involved in her whole persona, for one thing. And she is bordering on overexposure with sites like YouTube pimping her all over the place, even on videos for bands that aren't remotely close in genre.

I completely agree.

I've watched some interviews with her and she has a very :adore: speaking voice too!

Oh, I have a big crush on Lady Gaga. Great voice, very sweet, love that she has her own quirks and eccentricities.

I think she's way more than a fad, but I also think that comparisons are tricky. Personally I've never understood what the big fuss was about The Beatles, but they've obviously had a long lasting cultural impact. I do have to say though, I think Lady Gaga has progressed beyond pop star of the moment to having a broader impact, and I like that she's out there.

To answer the question, no, nobody has ever and I doubt will ever reach The Beatles status. With the music business in decline, it seems those days are long gone and will not return.

As far as Gaga bieng able to sing, I think she's a good singer and deserves a place in music history, but she needs to drop the crap. I saw her on SNL back in May I think and she started out a song by reall singing slowly on piano, but then stopped and started up all of her pop bullshit with the dancincing and the whigs and stuff. It really distracts from her real talent to have all of that other crap.

All of that bieng said, I don't really like her style o fmusic, if she did straight piano like Billy Joel or something, I might like it.

So I guess you weren't keen on Madonna's pointy metal brassieres either?

I believe she'll get close but I don't think she'll reach the popularity of the Beatles.

But her fans scare me to death.

Were they as insane for the Beatles as they are for Gaga

Her first album isn't even 3 years old yet. ;)

Get back to me if she is this popular 7 years from now, and I'll reassess. But 3 albums in less than 3 years? And upping the ante with gimmicky performance 'art'? To me, that equates to 'Too soon to tell'. The media hasn't even had a chance to get bored with her yet.

I'm not saying that she won't make it out of 'fad' status for me. She might. But not yet...and not for a while.

And I don't know that she has 'broader impact'. Certainly she has a lot of appeal to fans of current pop music. That much is clear. But not everyone is a fan of current pop music. And among those of us who are not particular fans of current pop music in general (not just Lady Gaga, but all current pop music), she is just an obtrusive, mouth-gaping-open face that we see on YouTube while were trying to get to the videos we really want to see.

Fans of all the genres sort of live in their own universes. And if you live in the pop universe, I have no doubt that she is HUGE - I would assume she is at the center of your current musical universe, in fact. But in my universe of the hard rock/metal genre? Not so much. ;) And she certainly does not command Beatle-level respect in my world. Not even close. :)

Gimmicks, I was/am only concerned with what is underneath.
