Rourke and Rockwell are the Iron Man 2 Villains!
Source:The Hollywood Reporter, Variety January 7, 2009

Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and Sam Rockwell (Frost/Nixon) are in talks to star as the villains in Marvel Studios' Iron Man 2, being directed by Jon Favreau from a script by Justin Theroux, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

THR says that Rourke would play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils. Variety adds that Rourke would play the Crimson Dynamo. "He's considered to be an evil version of Iron Man because he battles the superhero in a nuclear-powered suit of armor," says the trade.

Rockwell would play Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, being played by a returning Robert Downey Jr.

Rourke and Rockwell would be joining a cast that also includes the returning Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, who is replacing Terrence Howard.

Another part -- one for Stark's assistant Natasha -- is still open.

I can sort of see Rockwell as Tony's rival

so the basic idea is..........."escalation"? (where have we heard that before...)

The United States has a technological exo-suit super-soldier....who just publicly announced his identity at the end of the first film.........so the Ruskies respond by making their own exo-suit super-soldier?

This ain't a sequel, it's a god-darned arms race.

Iron Monger was an evil version of Stark. However, I think there are at least two other armor-powered villians that Iron Man fights in the comics-Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo. I don't really have a problem with another armor-powered guy because Iron Man doesn't have a lot of strong villians IMO.

Plus, with Hammer in there-a good move-it's like they are going to show dark versions of Stark/Iron Man, whereas Iron Monger represented all that in one package.

I hope they include the Mandarin again in some fashion and have him in the third film as the main villian.

Based on Rockwell's casting, it seems like they're going to remake Hammer as a more direct contrast to Stark in terms of age/etc rather than the more traditional version of the character.
An evil version of Iron Man? Wasn't that the bad guy in the first movie?
Most of Iron Man's rogues are tech-based, since they reflect his gimmick.

I suspect the Mandarin will be the third film, if they're going to do him.

There is not a heck of a lot of real variety in superhero stories once you get beyond the surface details. Its all variations on a theme.

I'm really not so sure that Crimson Dynamo is right way to go here. It has the potential to be far too much like a retread of the same ground covered in the first film. The Mandarin, besides being Iron Man's arch nemesis (seriously, this would be like Batman or Superman waiting until their third film to face The Joker or Lex Luthor) also has the benefit of being an entirely different style villain than the Iron Monger.

Yeah. If it he ain't involved in some manner I ain't interested.

I think Rourke is going to be Titanium Man, not Crimson Dynamo. He fits Boris Bullski better than any of the Dynamos.

^The "assistant" part is something I don't like, even as someone who can't stand Gwyneth Paltrow I thought she did a good job in the first movie and I wouldn't want to see her replaced.

This sounds great.

Other than "Watchmen," the "Iron Man" films are the only superhero movies I give a fuck about. Maybe if Warner Bros does something interesting with "Green Lantern" that'll be worthwhile - Jordan and his buddies are my all-time favorite costumed comic book heroes (Superman is a close second).
