Info on New Voyages/Phase II

I was waiting for Bread and Savagery and every few months I looked for news of it. Tonight I looked again first time since this summer and see that it is shut down. Does anyone know if the scripts are online or if anyone is taking over the shows that were in post production.

I was also surprised to read about the Axanar lawsuit, somehow I missed that, I saw the show that was made with Richard Hatch in documentary format but never looked further.

Are there other threads here that someone can point me to regarding the lawsuit. I'm not near LA but wonder how the case is going.

Live long and prosper.

The lawsuit is being discussed on this message board here.

For reporting on the case, I highly recommend Axa-Monitor, a site written by Carlos Pedraza, a journalist and former fan film writer. It's the only news source for the Axanar lawsuit that isn't shying away from the facts or lazily researched the way a lot of the mainstream blogs and news sites have been covering the story; it is likewise not susceptible to Alec Peters' broad censoring of the facts that cast a bad light on him.

In other words, Axa-Monitor is as close to unbiased reporting on the story that you'll find. You'll find there are many people who agree with this assessment as well, despite Alec Peters' desperate claims to the contrary.

The Axanar lawsuit has thrown the entire fan film system into disarray. CBS/Paramount issued some guidelines which are fairly restrictive and most productions have either suspended production to reassess or decided to quit altogether.
Not sure if it has been updated recently, but this thread has a listing of productions and their status:
http://www.trekbbs.com/threads/a-definitive-list.60711/

Thanks for the information, from what I read the case is going badly for Axanar and I can't really blame Paramount no matter how much I would like to see the movie. Maybe they should take the studio and run contests for fans to make their own movies.

most productions have either suspended production to reassess or decided to quit altogether.

Generally speaking, this is not true. Practically everyone suspended/shut down during the first week after the guidelines were announced, but practically everyone is back online now -- although a number of shows (Aurora, Farragut, maybe a couple others) decided to cut their planned runs shorter. The John Van Citters interview did a lot ot ease tensions, and the subsequent months of normalcy have restored a great deal of confidence.

Here's a full list: http://axamonitor.com/doku.php?id=guidelines_aftermath

On that list, there are only four shows that remain shut down, and the only one that you've probably heard of is Star Trek New Voyages.

Not sure if it has been updated recently, but this thread has a listing of productions and their status:

Yeah, that's my list. The old mod, Mallory, used to let me update this routinely. I tried to get it updated several times early this year, but got radio silence from the mods, and I gave up. I'm now working on Star Trek Reviewed (startrekreviewed.blogspot.com) and hopefully, at some point, the navigation there will get easier and we'll be able to get a similar list posted there.

If you give me a few minutes, I'll pull my updated copy of the Definitive List out of storage and post it in this space.

Bottom line for OP, though: Star Trek New Voyages is dead, and the future of the films it was working on at the time it died is unclear. We're all hoping that "Bread and Savagery" will eventually see the light of day!

Okay, here's Part 1 of 2 of the New Definitive List:

The Definitive List of Star Trek Fan Productions

by James Heaney (Wowbagger)
Last Updated: 1/7/2016

NOTE: This is my first update in seven years, and I don't think they're going to be a whole lot more frequent than that. For up-to-date information on Star Trek fan productions, refer to Barb Reader's Star Trek Reviewed. Barb has been fan filmdom's leading detective for several years now, tracking down lost fan films and logging them on her site on a near-daily basis. When this list updates again, STR is the first place I'll check, and her information was invaluable in getting this update released.

Double-Starred
If you are new to fan films, start with these, the finest examples of our medium. (They are listed in no particular order.)

Continues
(Film; 2013 - Present; 225 minutes)

Aurora
(CGI; 2008 - Present; 81 minutes)

Excelsior
(Audio; 2007 - Present; 1869 minutes)
(NOTE: Full disclosure: I make this show, so of course I think it's terrific.)

Starship Farragut
(Film; 2007 - Present; 330 minutes incl. animated specials)

Starship Exeter
(Film; 2002 - 2014; 100 minutes)
(NOTE: Site only seems to have the admittedly superior second episode; the pilot episode, "The Savage Empire," is on YouTube.)

Phase II (New Voyages)
(Film; 2003 - Present; 560 minutes)
(NOTE: Received a famous Cease & Desist order in 2004. After agreeing to certain terms guaranteeing that nobody in the production would make money, the C&D was rescinded, paving the way for modern fan films.)

Starred
These shows come recommended from various sources, and represent a broad range of what well-run fan productions can do. (Again, no particular order.)

Tales of Death and Honour
(Audiobook; 2008 - 2008; 12 minutes)

Axanar
(Film; 2014 - Present; 24 minutes)
(NOTE: Major lawsuit filed Dec 2015 following serious financial and production irregularities - may go offline without completion very soon.)

UFP: Codename Novus
(Audio; 2015 - Present; 19 minutes)

Unity (UK 2005)
(Film; 2005 - Present; 1000 minutes)
(NOTE: This long-running series is very, very hard to keep track of, as it has no official website or sane episode listing. Runtime estimate is very approximate, and URL points to Barb Reader's entry for it. Barb likes the show's recent work, which means it's worth a try.)

Valkyrie (movie-era)
(Audio; 2012 - Present; 281 minutes)

And Part 2:

Unwatchable Shows
All fan films require a certain suspension of expectations; they are amateur and must be indulged to be enjoyed. However, some are simply painful to watch, even for humans with a very high tolerance for the amateur. These shows, in particular, are so difficult that I do not believe even the most tolerant of fan film viewers would find them enjoyable. This is not a slight against their creators; many of these were school projects, or experiments for film-makers just starting out, or just kids having fun, and there was never any intention that they would be viewed or enjoyed by the general public. They are nevertheless included because the topic title says "definitive."

Parodies and Comedies

This list does not include parodies and comedies. (Okay, fine: legally, it has been argued that all transformative fan works are "parody" in a strict sense, so I guess this is a list of nothing but parodies. But you know what I mean: I don't document the funny stuff.)

Forthcoming

This list does not include forthcoming productions -- not even the ones I'm really excited about, like Horizon and Pacific 201.

Resources

Star Trek Reviewed by Barb Reader - an utterly invaluable resource to anyone trying to find fan films. I simply could not have updated this list without the help of her extensive records, period.

Star Trek Fan Produced Films & Audio Productions
by Fred Archer - I can't tell you how often I've learn about a new episode release solely thanks to Fred's famous pinned post showing up in my Facebook feed.

The TimeWell FanFic Star Trek Crew Database
by TimeWell Electronic Recording Productions - With so many shows out there, releasing episodes so occasionally, it can get tricky remembering who is who on each show. Well, wonder no more: the TWERPS have put together a snazzy little cheat sheet for a great many of the shows on this list!

Statistics

Total length of Star Trek canon, combined: 22 days, 8 hours, 10 minutes (not incl. TAS)
Total length of all Star Trek fan productions, combined: 18 days, 8 hours, 31 minutes
Equivalent to: Everything from "The Man Trap" to "Good Shepherd"

NOTICE: Feel free to copy, rewrite, and otherwise use this list and the information it contains for any purpose. Please give me attribution where possible.

CONTACT: If you are aware of any fan projects not currently on this list, or have noticed errors, or have found an online version of one of the Unavailable Films, or have calculated the “minutes produced” for a series more precisely than my rough estimate, or just want to shoot the breeze about last week’s Doctor Who episode, please post in this thread or PM me.

DISCLAIMER: I mainly keep this list for my personal reference; the fact that it is publicly pinned is a happy circumstance that I did not expect when I wrote it. I may refuse or simply ignore your suggestions, no matter how logical, well-reasoned, or eminently right they may appear to be, for the simple reason of “I don’t like it.” Please don’t take it personally. "Stars" are awarded solely at my discretion. If your production didn't receive a star, it doesn't mean I saw it and hated it; it often just means I haven't seen it yet. Not having a star isn't a slight, and there's lots of quality material in the unstarred section. Star Trek and related properties are owned by CBS and Paramount Pictures. Inclusion on this list does not imply any endorsement or facilitation of fan productions in general or any single fan production in particular.

It would be a crime for me not to mention that, since writing this list, many new episodes have been released from all kinds of shows. You can see all of them in the Star Trek Reviewed Headlines Archive, but I'd like to call particular attention to a few particularly interesting works that have come out since January 2016:

Star Trek: Horizon - an amazing 90-minute Enterprise-era movie, easily a double-starred project

Starship Excelsior - released their 50th Anniversary Special, an episode starring Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, and Robin Curtis (among others) -- quite possibly the last fan show to do anything like that, given the new guidelines

Star Trek Aurora - completed and released their second episode, "Mudd in Your I"

Star Trek Continues - released "Embrace the Winds" and (I think) "Come Not Between the Dragons"

Considering the Kickstarter money P2/NV started taking in to finish or fund these last few episodes, not to mention the new sets and the larger warehouse (and, if I'm not mistaken, it was Alec Peters that speerheaded all of his and talked them into their new direction and fundraising)..... it is rather improper and wrong IMO, to not release what they were now paid to do. The fans that donated deserve to have the final product, even if it is not perfect.

If I'm not mistaken, the STNV Kickstarters were slated to pay for "The Holiest Thing," "Mind-Sifter," and "Torment of Destiny."

Two of them got done and released, which just leaves "Torment". And the CBS situation makes it easy for STNV to point to the Guidelines and say, "Hey, we'd love to finish our last episode, but we can't now because of legal concerns."

It sucks, but there's very little about the Axanar snafus that doesn't.

If STNV ever pointed to the Guidelines and said that, then it would paint them in an even worse light, considering that CBS themselves said that the Guidelines are NOT retroactive, and that they are not laws. Considering this lawsuit is about, among other things, misuse of funds, I would like to think CBS would prefer that the money at least goes to where it was intended. It is still their fanbase.

P2/NV for better or worse has turned their sets into a CBS-licensed tourist attraction. I'm not sure there's any inclination on their part to start back up in fan film production. I too would like to see them complete their unfinished episodes, but find that doubtful at this time.

I hope that at some point, the unfinished P2/NV material will surface, either in finished form or in some sort of rougher form, but that's up to James at this point. Concerns about the use of any leftover crowdfunding aside, I really don't feel like James owes me anything. (Full disclosure: I did not donate to any of their fundraisers). Your mileage may vary and I do respect that.

Yeah, that's my list. The old mod, Mallory, used to let me update this routinely. I tried to get it updated several times early this year, but got radio silence from the mods, and I gave up.

To be fair, tragically, Mallory passed away a few years ago, so its not surprising you wouldn't have heard from him; GSchnitzer however has usually been responsive so its surprising to hear you never head back from him. :( Then again, with all the brouhaha over the guidelines and the New Voyages shutting down, he may well be too busy with that these days.

Yes, he's been busy.

To clarify some details on our 2015 Star Trek New Voyages Kickstarter, we specified to what the donated money was to be applied:

"FIRST GOAL: $20,000

"$20,000 covers the basic costs (very basic) of our July 2015 Shoot, such as electricity, equipment rental and other filming expenses. So, making our base goal allows us to cover our basic expenses, and leaves covering the rest of the shoot expenses up to our production team.

"$50,000 STRETCH GOAL

"With your help in reaching this goal, the rest of our expenses for our July 2015 "Torment of Destiny" shoot will be met, and this will also allow us the funding necessary to complete more of our standing sets including realize a fully completed Medical office/Lab and Exam Room! So Please help the good Doctor McCoy get his digs!"

Since we (just barely) hit the $50,000 Stretch Goal ($50,001!) we seem to be obliged to provide the following things:
  • Basic production costs for our June 2015 shoot ("Torment of Destiny") DONE
  • Post-production costs (editing, color timing, music, sound effects, etc.) necessary to get "Torment of Destiny" released IN PROCESS
  • Completion of more of our standing sets--including McCoy's medical office/laboratory/examination room Sick Bay suite. DONE
So, to make good on this Kickstarter campaign, we've been working on completing "Torment of Destiny." Much time, energy, money, and resources are being sunk into our new "Star Trek: The Original Set Tour" project. But we continue to get work done on "Torment of Destiny;" I'm optimistic that we'll finally get it out the door eventually.

I don't know what James' plans are for "Origins: The Protracted Man," and for "Bread and Savagery." (I knew at one time, but it's all a new ball game since CBS' Fan Film Guidelines were released. I don't know what James' thinking is now; much post-production work remains on these two episodes.)

I keep hoping, however in vain it might be, that James Cawley & Vic Mignogna would bury the hatch, join forces and complete the remaining P2/NV episodes. Vic's got all the same sets, so I imagine it wouldn't too difficult to grab the Enterprise interior shots needed, or do whatever reshoots may be necessary to patch discontinuities.

To be fair, tragically, Mallory passed away a few years ago, so its not surprising you wouldn't have heard from him;

Yeah, I learned about Mallory in January. He was a really good guy, even while he was wearing his mod hat -- which is no easy task, I know. I was sad to hear of his passing, and even sadder that I hadn't heard of it.

I did then follow up a couple times with GSchnitzer, but, you're right -- this was the second week of January 2016, so the boards were still on fire with the news of the Axanar suit and (we now know) STNV was working behind-the-scenes on its transition to a tour destination. The chaos of 2016 has been pretty much constant since then. So I imagine he was, as you say, incredibly busy, and may have missed the PM's entirely. I might try again now... but, ugh, updating the spreadsheet and then exporting it to BBCode again gives me the heebie-jeebies. So we'll see.

This news completely makes my day. I really thought STNV would never release anything ever again. So thank you for the update!

That is good news to hear. Even if it turns out to be the last NV/P2 release, it will be good to see everyones hard work on the project get the airtime it and they deserve.:):bolian:
