I know the show takes place in the 2380s, but there are still things introduced in "new Trek" that would have been present earlier. Not to mention "Strange New Worlds" and seasons 1-2 of "Discovery" both being set before TOS.

How about some references to:
  • Kelpian as a delicacy
  • That sweet Mirror Universe armor from DISCO
  • The Enterprise's Aenar chief engineer
  • Gorn laying eggs inside people
  • The Qowat Milat (those Romulan samurai nuns)
  • The Fennis Rangers
  • Ex-drones being hunted for their parts (they've done comical things with other canonically dark subjects)
I'm also still starving for more jabs at "Enterprise." They've had fun with the embarrassing episodes from TOS, TNG, DS9 and "Voyager," I don't see why "Enterprise" of all shows deserves slack. Give us some jokes about the Decontamination Chamber, spacefaring beagles, dog funerals in the rain turning hot and steamy, and "watering" aliens' sacred trees.

Mike McMahan has explained the reason there's so few jokes and references to the newer shows is because they're so new, he and the other writers haven't had the chance to watch them a million times resulting in them percolating in their subconscious. Though we did end up with "Ritos" t-shirts.

The second season includes some lines which could be interpreted as jabs to the current shows, such as Boimler complaining about the Titan's missions being a long and overly complex arc or Mariner being yelled at to stop dwelling on her feelings and get on with her job.

I forgot about the "RITOS" shirts!

There was a gold Disco Enterprise uniform top glimpsed during the buggy chase through the starbase in "Dooplers", and Captain Shelby's first officer at the end was Prototype Saru.

But yeah, new stuff will take a back seat to the nostalgia which the show is based around. The latest episode did reference "an alternate universe with Kirk and Spock's cinematic bromance" or something similar as a recurring dream Sam was having.

Disco Section 31 black badges and the silliness of a secret cabal choosing to identify itself with a unique badge get shredded in the latest episode. As does the idea of a parallel timeline where everyone is played by younger, hotter actors.

It's real Trek now.
