I did not like how Reginald Barclay was treated in “The Nth Degree”

they treated him like crap all the time. Riker calling him broccoli in front of Picard should have gotten Riker relieved of duty for a few days.
Most of his awkwardness was due to the rest of the crew being dicks to him

One, Riker didn't do it. Geordi did. Riker just explained the "joke", and Picard told them to end it. Whether he should have relieved Geordi or not is another question.

And regarding his awkwardness, yes and no. As a person who deals with similar issues to Barclay's, I know that a some of his awkwardness comes from how he's treated. But, that treatment also comes from his awkwardness. It's a vicious circle. I've endured similar abuse IRL, and I'm not deluded enough to believe that my choices and actions haven't contributed.

Picard was the one who said it to Barclay directly.

No Riker actually did it (IE used the nickname when talking to Picard about Reginald Barkley In Picard's ready room as they were discussing what to do with him because all of his fitness reports came back as unsatisfactory - which Picard mentioned he wasn't used to seeing on his ship.)

That's why he had to explain where the nickname came from and that others in the crew were using it.

By accident though, right?

Yes. The uses were as follows...

1. Wesley started using it, offscreen.
2. Riker used it in private, with Geordi.
3. Geordi used it to Picard, discussing him. Picard ordered it ended.
4. Wesley and one of the engineers both used it regarding him, after the meeting. Data basically called him on it. Geordi told the group that Picard had ordered it stopped. It was never deliberately used again.
5. Picard used it to Barclay's face, unintentionally.

No  because it's yet another silly, pointless stream of consciousness BS thread here on TrekBBS. Any random thought that pops into someone's head, let's post it.
The member probably read the Geordi married a girl? thread. I'm surprised the haters on that thread were so easy to call Geordi, a fine character in my opinion, a perv for his episode of weakness to an illusion while I thought Reginald Barkley did far worse violations to prominent characters' likenesses and gets a pass. Giving creative reasons and justifications for his violating behavior is okay for those people while Geordi should be strung up and be called all kinds of names. Incredible!

I think it's because Barclay is a very flawed, very human character. When he does something like that, we're neither disappointed nor surprised. But when Geordi (a much more "heroic" character) messes up, we take a certain perverse pleasure in dragging him through the dirt.

You should hang out in TNZ with us and check out @Jayson1's threads.
