Thomas William "Tom" Selleck (born January 29, 1945) is an American actor, screenwriter and film producer, perhaps best known for his starring role on the television show "Magnum, P.I.."

Selleck's first TV appearance was as a college senior on "The Dating Game" in 1965 and again in 1967 - he lost both times. Soon after, he appeared in commercials for products such as Chaz cologne and Pepsi. He began his career with bit parts in smaller movies and in a number of TV series, mini-series and TV movies. Selleck also had a recurring role in the 1970s as Lance White in "The Rockford Files." Lance was very trusting and always lucky, much to the annoyance of Jim Rockford. Selleck, after years of little interest, was cast as Thomas Magnum in "Magnum, P.I". and as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark in the same year. Magnum, P.I. producers would not release the actor and he had to pass on the film role, which then went to Harrison Ford.

Selleck starred in a number of film roles during and after Magnum; among the most notable were as an acrophobic police detective in Runaway, as a stand-in father in Three Men and a Baby, and as an American cowboy in the Australian western Quigley Down Under, a role and film that he considers one of his best. His other films include Three Men and a Little Lady, High Road to China, Lassiter, Her Alibi, An Innocent Man, Mr. Baseball, In & Out, The Love Letter and the historical drama Ike:Countdown to D-Day.

Most recently, Selleck has appeared in a recurring role on the acclaimed ABC drama "Boston Legal as Ivan Tiggs," the troubled ex-husband of Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen), on "Las Vegas "(2O08) as multimillionaire Cooper and on "Friend," in the recurring role of Dr. Richard Burke, which garnered him a 2000 Emmy Award nomination for "Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series". Most recently, he has appeared as novelist Robert B. Parker's character Jesse Stone in six CBS made-for-TV movies, earning a 2007 Emmy nomination for "Jesse Stone: Sea Change."

In his spare time, he has played competitive volleyball with the Outrigger Canoe Club and was a three-time All American selection, twice winning the over-35 division in the National Championships. He is also the national spokesman for Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.

Well, I vote thumbs up. I like him more now that he's older. He never really floated my boat as Magnum (although I enjoyed the show). Now he's older I think he's hot. I loved him as Richard in Friends. He likes to show off his legs, doesn't he? That's fine, he has nice legs.

I can't believe he hasn't already been hunk o' the week!

auntiehill's done very well to resist this long.

I gotta vote meh, though; he's never done anything for me either way. He was good in Friends, though. :bolian:

The way Tom Selleck looks these days (especially in those Jesse Stone movies he's been doing the last couple of days) bears an almost frightening resemblance to my stepfather.

I wish I had a picture of the man on hand. It's seriously creepy.

I'm a straight guy, but I'm gonna go ahead and vote "Yes" on this one. He's a good lookin' cat and an underrated actor.

I voted thumbs up because although I didn't care for him much when he was younger, he aged really well, right up through Friends.

There's a problem now, though...He is now (starting with the Boston Legal pix) starting to look a bit like my older brother! Eek! I never noticed this before opening this thread, and nuthin' against my brother, of course, but it seriously takes away the hotness for me. Maybe it's just the beard...

So anyway, I gave him a thumbs up based on all the photos above Boston Legal. But my, you did startle me, AuntieHill!

Creepy or ridiculously cool? I wish I had a uncle that looked like Tom Selleck. Would be even cooler if he was a Detroit Tigers fan too!

Tom Selleck still really cool. Most of us men can only hope to one day maybe be half as cool as him.

Hmm. He definitely technically qualifies as a hunk, but I never cared for him much. I'm not sure why. I was never interested in Magnum, PI, although I liked that type of detective show in those days, and I was always glad that he didn't get to be Indiana Jones.

I guess I'll go with Sideways.

I'm not gay, but I still just had to comment and say Tom Selleck rocks. :techman:

Loved him in Magnum and Quigley (I'm still bummed they never made any more of those).

My mother has a friend who used to work as an extra. She was in several big films, one of which (I can't recall the film's title) was a movie Tom Selleck was starring in. This was right at the point where he was getting a lot of big scripts and was being touted as the next big Hollywood star.

Apparently, he was one of the nicest guys in the world. Talked to everyone on the set, ate lunch at the extra's table, never flipped out or gave in to diva dramatics.

She was also in a Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman vehicle. According to her they were constantly surrounded by a team of bodyguards who weren't shy about tossing you on your ass if you even got near them.

^ It's usually hit or miss, but with a lot of ladies that's a plus.

Me, I was madly in love with his Ferrari 308.

*melts*

*shudder* No. Just no.

"Too much hair!" ;)

Seriously, the moustache freaks me out. Coupled with the thick eyebrows I could seriously have nightmares about caterpillar-face chasing me and wanting to invade my personal space with furriness.

No man on the planet should be allowed a moustache. They never, ever look good. He was good in Friends. He'd make a good sitcom actor.

That kind of mustache was very common in the 70s, and was becoming passe when Magnum came on the air. I remember being a little surprised to see it on a lead character at that point.
