How to open case on old Compaq Presario

I have an old Presario, and need to replace the CMOS battery, and need to remove the case to get to it. Problem is, the screws that hold it together are in deep narrow "wells" in the underside of the case, and I can't tell what kind of screws are used. I don't want to risk stripping the heads by using the wrong tool. Anyone know if I'm dealing w/ phillips head, or hex screws, or what? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Get a flashlight and have a look. If you still can't see them, stick a screwdriver down in there and see if it feels like it engages the screw head properly. As long as you don't put too much force on it you won't do any damage to the screw, but you should be able to tell when you have the right tool.

Jadzia... the page you link seemingly specifies a Presario PC, which is a desktop machine, not a notebook. Thanx though.

Farmkid... the recessed screw wells are deep enough, and narrow enough, that it's really difficult to see down them. It appears to be a phillips-head, but a phillips head screwdriver doesn't seat into it well enough to "get a grip". Thanks nonetheless.

Just heard from a friend that many Presarios of the day used Torx screws, but I've never seen a torque-driver so tiny. Looks like I'm off on another obscure tool search. Oh well.

It would help if you said what model of Presario you have. Depending on where you are from, Torx screw drivers can either be bought online or you can go to your local hardware store and buy a kit that holds multiple torx in a "swiss army knife" fashion.

More information means less confusion and faster information back to you. :)
