I think the title says it all. How do you play Gameboy games in 2021?

As we know the Gameboy line ran for nearly 20 years between 1989 and 2009, and people still play these games, and a select few have been reissued, either on the various virtual consoles, as part of classic game compilations (I.e Disney’s Aladdin & Lion King) or through licensing deals for modern retro consoles.

Right now I’ve got my GameCube hooked up to my HDTV with S-Video and I’m using the Gameboy Player to play some Gameboy games. I just wish the Gameboy Player allowed for the Super Gameboy borders. And it’s to bad that Nintendo never released a follow up for the DS, DSi & 3DS (this would’ve been great on the WiiU with the TV acting as the 3DS’s top screen and the Gamepad as the bottom screen). And the Gameboy Player doesn’t allow Gameboy Advance videos to play on screen, for fear that people would copy the low res videos to a VHS! From what I’ve seen, those GBA Videos are of lower quality than VHS!

I never actually had a Gameboy. I have considered getting one of these new Arduboys, but I don't think they'll be emulating. Should be their own game development. The PlayDate looks good too, but I haven't seen anything about games for it.

I generally play Game Boy games on my Game Boy SP. But I play some via Virtual Console and ones that are too hard to get and/or are too expensive via emulation.

I do have a GBA SP 101 and a few dozen GB/GBC/GBA games in a box somewhere, but these days I just stick with emulation. It's so convenient and my old man eyes have trouble seeing that minuscule Game Boy screen. Despite the common wisdom, Game Boy games look awesome on a 55inch 4K TV.

I have a Raspberry Pi 4 hooked up to my TV for all my casual emulation needs and my PC is ready for the more serious playing like speedrunning.

PC Emulation, I won't lie. There was a whole big site and the software I got for it (specifically, I wanted to play Rebelstar: Tactical Command again) works, though it's buried in a disconnected HDD somewhere.

Oh, wow, Rebelstar: Tactical Command. That's a name I have not heard in a long time. I have the cart for that game. It was perhaps overly ambitious for a GBA title and as a result a bit awkward to play, but portable X-COM in 2005? Can't complain about that.

Indeed, and they shove in so much story into it.

I found the old drive, I have something called a 'virutalboy' or somesuch to run it. Might not work now but it worked in the past!

I tend to use original equipment or the Gameboy player over Virtual Console. The Virtual Console I find Nintrndo tends to mostly stick to the games that they own all the fights to. So you rarely see the tie-in games that were released. And there were a number of good tie-in games like “Aladdin, DuckTales 1&2, Darkwing Duck, Star Trek The Next Generation, Wheel of Fortune”. So with OEM and the GB Player, you just need the cartridge.

Still have a Game Boy. I have the model that came out just before they died out, it's got a transparent case which I LOVE because you can see the guts inside. Only have a few cartridges but have also tried PC emulation, and you can even do it on a Raspberry Pi
