How do I turn my 3 view drawings into 3d in sketchup?

I have the three views, how do I get the program to 3d them?

You mean the ones from your 2D-kitbashes thread?
You can't get the programme to to that for you. You shouldn't do it yourself either.
I mean those kitbashes aren't awful... okay they are... they could be used to learn the programme; the tutorials posted here should give you the basic skills.
But you should try and be a little more original, imaginative with your designs.

In short, there is no easy way to turn drawings into models. You have to make the models yourself, using the drawings to guide you as you go. There is no button in Sketchup, Lightwave, Max or Blender that I am aware of that will make your model for you.

I have to say, you're the first person I've run into that really believed the fallacy that the software does it all for you. If you think it took you a while to make the kitbashes, be prepared for a slog of epic proportions as you learn 3D modeling. It's worth the effort, but few have the tenacity for it.

Well put Axeman. I'm amazed at the work that is done by all of you who can master a 3d program. ;) Alot of practice and work. :techman:

I usually start with some straight lines. Other people start with some circles. Pick whatever works for you.

Boxes for me, or occasionally curved lines.

I have played about with experimental software that uses photos from multiple angles to create a 3D mesh, but its a bit off yet. Not to impune 2D guys skills either but the 3-views that they make are usually hiding errors and inconsistencies that dont become apparent until you try to turn them into 3D. Trying to do it using an automated system would probably be difficult at best.

Stare at the screen really hard and wait... I swear this will work- don't listen to the rest of these know-it-alls! ;)

Heh... Seriously though- just go through the tutorials and practice. Be patient and learn from your mistakes and you should get there.

Your best bet may be to build a library of 3d components, much like Vance did with his 2d parts that you used to build your designs. Then, assemble them in pieces as needed. There are a lot of freeware fan-made Starfleet components out there. I don't know how good SketchUp is at importing from other formats, but if you're having a hard time building the pieces, that may also be a way to go.

The best analogy is that it's like the martial arts. It looks cool and everyone would like to be able to do it, but it takes a lot of practice and patience to get anywhere near good. No one is Bruce Lee their first night.

This splits posters on this forum into two groups; those who ask for help or advice learning a new technique, and those who come on touting for someone to do all the hard work for them. You can try to make it sound like you're creating a Hollywood epic and doing us a favour, but its still boils down to begging for free work you cant be bothered learning to do yourself.

This is how I set up 3 views for modeling, of course you still have to recreate the shapes.

Unsure about sketchup, but in 3d Studio Max, you can import Illustrator and Cad drawing plan files and loft the shapes into 3d objects; otherwise you will just have to recreate the objects using your plans as a guide, once set up as above.

Cheers! -LS

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

When reading the documentation, I thought the edge extrusion tool that would let you turn a plan view into a 3d model (for floorplans) would somehow work with more complex 3-views...guess I was wrong.

Oh well... :)

I DID manage to make a 80% from scratch saucer section in 2d though...see my other thread.

This.

Ironically, this same logic applies to photoshop and most other artistic endeavors as well.

Thank you for the compliments, made my day! It's all old stuff but I hope to make some new contributions soon.
