How did pre - Surak Vulcan look like (and what kind of texts/literature did they make)?

I wonder what pre - Sukar Vulcan looks like. We know there was a pretty advanced civilization there already, as they had atomic bombs, but there is little else we know. The Vulcans themselves claim that pre -Sukar Vulcans were savages who nearly destroyed themselves and their world. However this account is, of course, biased, as Vulcans may be saying it to justify their current culture and ideology. Especially since, regardless how bad Romulans are at times, they are not completely anarchistic savages who self - destruct. They managed to make a functional (more or less) space empire.

So, with everything we know about this civilization, do you have any thoughts on how it looked? How did it work? And, in a more particular aspect, what kind of texts or literature would they do? Could you provide a sample of such a text (even a short one)?

Possibly similar to what we know of late 21st century to early 22nd century Earth in terms of technology, but without the cultural awakening. As for specific writings or texts, I imagine there would be many philosophical texts available exposing the various Vulcan philosophies of the time. Both those that would align closer to Surak and those that would align closer to those who would become the Romulans. Works of scientific theory seem a given. I can't see why there wouldn't be works of fiction and speculation as well.

I imagine it being a really nightmarish place, like the setting of "Hobo With A Shotgun." A movie about Surak might play out like a classic "exploitation film;" just nonstop, over-the-top violence and depravity of every kind, until the very end. Or maybe even up to the very end, if Surak was martyred.

Just remember; this wasn't one messed-up city or nation. This was an entire planet that was so bad, repressing emotion became the norm.

Add the telepathic abilities with violence, must have been a real shithole planet

There are also 5 books by Sherman and Schwartz on the subject. More recent than Diane Duane's, but perhaps not as memorable (given that I don't remember anything about them other than there existence).

I haven't read any Star Trek novels for a long, long time. Are these worth picking up?

Vulcan's Forge, Vulcan's Heart, and the Vulcan's Soul trilogy are all Sherman & Schwartz.

The Romulan Way, and its sequels, are all Diane Duane, as is Spock's World.
