Hirogen theory

Detached Nacelle

Captain
Red Shirt
We see many Hirogen hunters in VOY. Big strong macho lot and barely a passing mention of the females of their species. One believes he will be persued by women for his trophies.

Now it could be easy to assume a Kazon like view where the women are kept away, they raise the children and that's about thier only place in society. But what if Hirogen are a matriarchal society. The reason we only see male hunters is because all the men are sent away from larger colony ships. It is the men that have no real place in society other than to hunt and prove themselves the strongest and worthy of the right to reproduce.

Hirogen females are just as large and strong as the males but they are in charge so they don't need to hunt, collect trophies and risk their own lives they just make their males do it.

In a society ritualistically and theologically obsessed with hunting some must hunt and some must acknowledge and reward the hunt.

That could work. I guess it depends if you take what is seen onscreen and boil it down to something for a whole species or a society.
Like, take Star Wars. I never saw a woman Imperial officer until 2015, but before that I never thought there was some discrimination in play like the EU intimated, keeping women out of the Imperial Navy. I just bought it as they just cast a bunch of dudes because that's just how they decided to film it.
Same with Starfleet, just because we see predominantly human ships doesn't mean there aren't predominantly Vulcan ships or Andorian ships

I say that female Hirogen are completely indistinguishable from the males, and some of the ones we saw were female. ;)

...Or heck, maybe the females look mostly the same but are generally shorter than males, and that's why the Hirogen shrunk so much in later episodes!

How about there are no females, period, and they're just an asexually reproducing species ? :P
Because females are mentioned at one point.

Because females are mentioned at one point.
Where?

The only quote I can find at short notice is this one in Hunters:

SEVEN: What possible use could you make of my intestines?
ALPHA: Unusual relics are prized. Yours will make me envied by men and pursued by women.

Nowhere does he state these are Hirogen men and/or women.

There are Hirogen and Herogen.

Welcome to the Delta Quadrant! Welcome to the strange! The bizarre! The unexpected!

For all their ferocity, the Hirogen males must have egos as fragile as candyglass.

Even so, it is interesting how much we (try to) make from even the tiniest snippets of dialog as Trekkies.
^ It's what we do.

I don't see female Hirogen solely staying home, washing clothes, and minding the kids. The males we see are clearly the traditional warrior caste roaming about for the thrill of the hunt. The women are probably doing all of the decision making and heavy lifting on the home-world and keeping things running. Probably like the Orions or Klingons.

Well they don't have a homeworld but I envision larger colony cruisers. Home bases for the hunting escorts to resupply and neutral ground for trade and showing off trophies. I believe the Hirogen hunter Chal'mer said what's the point of having a trophy if you can't show it off?

I hope Hirogen hunter Chal'mer was prepared for an unforgettable luncheon.

I hear he was a hunter of such renown he didn't have to skin his own prey, he had someone devoted to doing it for him. No one remembers this other one's name though as Chal'mer would just address him by his position when he would shout for his skinner.

The Hirogen females sending the males out to "hunt" while they are the ones that call the shots and rule Hirogen society, I quite like that idea.
