All Gregg Press
Star Trek titles were photo reprints of the original Pocket/Timescape paperbacks. In other words, they are "shot" from a paperback copy, and printed on better paper with a hardcover binding and a colorful dustjacket. So, whatever's on page 189 of the paperback is exactly what's on page 189 of the later hardcover, typos and all. Pretty much only the copyright page is different. Oh, and Gregg omitted the ads at the back.
The Gregg titles were distributed in the UK by Firecrest (well, most of them, anyway -- the TWoK and TSfS novelizations had already had UK HC reprint by different publishers, so Firecrest skipped those).
Firecrest also did six more titles in the UK in 1987, after Gregg Press went belly-up:
Killing Time by Della Van Hise (using the unexpurgated, "slashy" text from the first US printing).
Dwellers in the Crucible by Margaret Wander Bonanno
Pawns and Symbols by Majliss Larson
Ishmael by Barbara Hambly
Shadow Lord by Laurence Yep
Mindshadow by J.M. Dillard
All these had cover art by Boris Vallejo. They're extremely rare, especially on this side of the pond. Anyone got
Ishmael or
Dwellers in good condition they want to unload?
Gregg Press had an extensive program of reprinting SF paperback originals in hardcover for the library market. In the 70's, they were doing their books in sturdy green cloth boards with no dustjackets. If you prowled the SF section of a major library back then, you saw a bunch of these. By the 80's, they were putting them in cheaper bindings with a dustjacket, looking to sell them to readers as well. That's how they did the
Star Trek reprints.
Interestingly, the Gregg Press science fiction line was overseen by David Hartwell, who was later hired by Pocket Books to start their science fiction imprint -- Timescape Books -- in 1980 or 81. Hartwell continued "moonlighting" for Gregg Press, and after Timescape folded at the end of 1983, Hartwell started licensing for Gregg Press many the
Star Trek titles he'd edited for Pocket Timescape.
Gregg Press ended its science fiction reprint program towards the end of 1986. The 1986
Star Trek reprints were among it's last offerings.
