Hardcovers

For space reasons, I tend to mostly acquire Trek books in ebook form, and I've limited my bookshelf space to the various hardcovers I've bought over the years.

I was curious if certain favorites of mine were ever published in hardcover, and was wondering if there's any kind of definitive list online?

The wikipedia list of the novels seems to have a number of omissions, especially Pocket books from the 80s. I can't even write that off as them being special book club editions, which some are, but I have a number of early novels like Yesterday's Son and Corona that aren't on the wiki list. Just curious about the rhyme or reason as to what was published in HC over the years, and what's available.

Yesterday's Son and Corona would have both been SFBC editions, or otherwise some kind of special edition. Spock's World was the first original hardcover from Pocket/S&S.

A good source for reissues is the ISFDB. Here's the page for Yesterday's Son, for example: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?3821

Thanks. I would have assumed book club editions would say so somewhere on them, and these don't. I have SFBC omnibuses for Vulcan's Soul, Janus Gate and Rihannsu, which are all clearly labeled SFBC. I see Memory Alpha has an incomplete list with Yesterday's Son but not Corona.

Anyway, thanks for the help!

UPDATE: ah, I see from the website cited above:

Until November 1996, no SFBC editions were ever identified as being published by the Science Fiction Book Club. (Ill Met in Lankhmar by Fritz Leiber is the first known publication to credit the SFBC as the publisher.) The publisher as stated in the book was always the original publisher of the title. Even original editions published exclusively for the club carried the Nelson Doubleday imprint. Only in recent years has the Science Fiction Book Club imprint been used on reprints of classic works and original omnibuses

All Gregg Press Star Trek titles were photo reprints of the original Pocket/Timescape paperbacks. In other words, they are "shot" from a paperback copy, and printed on better paper with a hardcover binding and a colorful dustjacket. So, whatever's on page 189 of the paperback is exactly what's on page 189 of the later hardcover, typos and all. Pretty much only the copyright page is different. Oh, and Gregg omitted the ads at the back.

The Gregg titles were distributed in the UK by Firecrest (well, most of them, anyway -- the TWoK and TSfS novelizations had already had UK HC reprint by different publishers, so Firecrest skipped those).
Firecrest also did six more titles in the UK in 1987, after Gregg Press went belly-up:
Killing Time by Della Van Hise (using the unexpurgated, "slashy" text from the first US printing).
Dwellers in the Crucible by Margaret Wander Bonanno
Pawns and Symbols by Majliss Larson
Ishmael by Barbara Hambly
Shadow Lord by Laurence Yep
Mindshadow by J.M. Dillard
All these had cover art by Boris Vallejo. They're extremely rare, especially on this side of the pond. Anyone got Ishmael or Dwellers in good condition they want to unload? :rommie:

Gregg Press had an extensive program of reprinting SF paperback originals in hardcover for the library market. In the 70's, they were doing their books in sturdy green cloth boards with no dustjackets. If you prowled the SF section of a major library back then, you saw a bunch of these. By the 80's, they were putting them in cheaper bindings with a dustjacket, looking to sell them to readers as well. That's how they did the Star Trek reprints.

Interestingly, the Gregg Press science fiction line was overseen by David Hartwell, who was later hired by Pocket Books to start their science fiction imprint -- Timescape Books -- in 1980 or 81. Hartwell continued "moonlighting" for Gregg Press, and after Timescape folded at the end of 1983, Hartwell started licensing for Gregg Press many the Star Trek titles he'd edited for Pocket Timescape.

Gregg Press ended its science fiction reprint program towards the end of 1986. The 1986 Star Trek reprints were among it's last offerings.

Edited to add: Info about TSfS novelization, the demise of Gregg Press, and ISFDB links.

This is a list of the Hardcover books in the various Star Trek lines ordered by date of original release:
There was also a Simon & Schuster slipcase hardcover edition of the novelization of "The Motion Picture".

I heard there was a hardcover of ST II as well, but no slipcover.

SF Book Club did hardcovers for the novelisations, too, but not for ST VI.

I heard there was a hardcover of ST II as well, but no slipcover.

It was a UK "library" edition from Macdonald. It had a dustjacket, but no slipcase. ISBN 0-356-08687-9.

SF Book Club did hardcovers for the novelisations, too, but not for ST VI.
SFBC:
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

In the UK, Severn House did "library" hardcovers of the following movie novelizations:
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (ISFDB doesn't list it, but it's on my shelf)
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (Also not listed in ISFDB. I guess I need to make some updates!)
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (as best I can determine, this is the only hardcover of the the Star Trek VI novelization anywhere in the world.)

By the time of the Next Generation films, Pocket started publishing movie novelizations in hardcovers, so there were no "library" reprints by smaller presses.

And here from that website above are the SFBC editions.

It's missing the New Frontier omnibus which is nicer than the version Pocket put out. No, it doesn't have Dave Mack's Minipedia, but it's also the same size (or near enough) to Pocket's other 90s hardcovers rather than Pocket's MMPB size.

Was the US edition this one? (I remember a hardcover being mentioned in "Starlog".)
https://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-II-McINTYRE-Hardcover/dp/B015X540CK
No, the US hardcover was this: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?32675

That looks like an “aftermarket” hardcover done by taking the text block (i.e., the printed pages) from a paperback book, after removing the cover somehow, wrapping it in a custom rigid cardboard cover, with the original wraparound cover embedded under clear plastic. My middle and high school libraries had a lot of these back in the 70’s. They were more durable than a regular mass market paperback, but not as durable as an actual hardcover printed on quality paper.

That's the 1984 Gregg Press one. But there was supposed to have been a limited-edition Simon & Schuster hardcover released just after the Pocket Books MMPB version.
I don’t believe any such book was ever released. I’ve never seen it (and I’ve been collecting Trek books since the ‘70’s.) ISFDB doesn’t know about it; ABE Books doesn’t know about it. WorldCAT doesn’t know about it. I think Starlog got it wrong.

I swear I saw a hardcover copy of the Destiny trilogy omnibus, but I can't find it anywhere now.
I think I finally found the one thing that is different in this reality from the last one I was in.
