I forgot to mention that Jan Shutan turned 36 while the episode was being filmed! In Marc Cushman's "These are the Voyages: TOS Season Three" he writes: "Day 3, Tuesday. The entire day was spent in the briefing room. (Herb) Kenwith, well experienced in live TV with the soaps, knew how to cover pages of expository dialogue quickly, and finished early, at 4:24 p.m. He was still on schedule." He also notes they were "awaiting news from NBC as to whether "Lights of Zetar" would be the last episode to film." A behind the scenes photo of this filming day (Nov. 5th) is on my blog.

Scotty : "You're the sanest, the smartest, the nicest woman that has ever come aboard this ship." :barf:

I wouldn't trust Cushman if he told me the sky was blue and grass was green.

Jan was nice but she couldn't hold a candle to Marianna Hill or Irene Kelley in my opinion! :nyah:

He was complimenting her. What's wrong with that?

Some people don't like the implication that for women in general, their sanity is suspect. (I'm fine with it. It's just Scotty being Scotty, dishing up a well-meaning faux pas.)

I find it funny that immediately after he says that, you see this:

CHEKOV: I didn't think Mister Scott would go for the brainy type.
SULU: I don't think he's even noticed she has a brain.

Now granted, they weren't on hand to hear him call her smart. If she wasn't intelligent, he wouldn't have called her dumb, but he wouldn't have mentioned her intelligence at all.

It's also worth noting that Scotty calls Mira sane before she begins to doubt her sanity/health (that is, before the Zetarians go inside her)

"Lights of Zetar" is one of those TOS episodes that makes me feel like they're dealing with something that truly is alien (as opposed to cute girls in go-go boots, or some dude painted blue). When the victims get that unearthly glow about them and they're making those odd croaking noise, it's so unusual in its presentation and then there's that music that goes along with it ... it's way over-the-top, all of it.

I liked Jan's performance, you could see that she was trying to make us like her and feel for her predicament, and all that. She seemed sweet. I just hated how lame Scotty was around her. She probably saw his chub, anyway, all he had to do was act natural. Play it cool ... but no! He's all like, "oh, me bonnie lass!" And what could Jan do? It was a decent show, otherwise and I'm glad she's still with us. All the Best to her!

Well, they needed a "Scotty in love" scene to accompany Kirk's rather commentary-laced captain's log. Maybe they decided to use something that had been cut instead of what was there previously?
