Entertainment Weekly broke the news today that ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" has parted ways with Brooke Smith, who plays Dr. Eric Hahn on the popular show. EW says this was not creator Shonda Rhimes' decision but rather an order that came down from the network. The ABC executives reportedly "had issues" with both the explicit direction Hahn's relationship with Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) was taking and with the Hahn character in general.
Surprisingly, this Thursday will be the last time you see the Hahn character, who doesn't get a proper goodbye as she just heads out to her car. You can read a full interview with Smith on the situation here.

In related news, E! Online adds that Melissa George's ("Alias") new character came on to the show as a bisexual character and love interest for Callie, but now isn't as they changed the script. George plays Meredith's (Ellen Pompeo) best friend and a new intern at Seattle Grace.

Shonda Rhimes also issued the following statement tonight : "Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show -- Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie. I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with 'another lesbian.' If you'll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season."

I'm not a big fan of her character and the actress in general but she had her moments on the show but how the CEOs apparently treated her is very shitty and not something you should do.

At least give her a proper sendoff like Burke who was by all acounts a giant asshole who deserved to be fired.

I didn't like it when they brought the Hahn character in as a regular, but they should at least give her a proper sendoff. It's obvious turning her into a lesbian really messed with her head -- i.e. the crying about the leaves and blobs -- so that would be a starting point for her leaving the hospital.

Instead, it just comes across as petty, kneejerk studio interference.

It's too bad we never get to find out which executives make what boneheaded decisions, especially considering the sheer volume of boneheaded decisions that are made. I want to know who told Vince Flynn to change the terrorists from Middle Eastern to... Filipino.

Personally I'm quite happy about this. I never liked Hahn, so this is good news for me.

The fact that they're bringing Melissa George on the show is even better. :D

I don't even watch the show, and I'm pissed. This is a cowardly homophobic move.

You fans need to boycott the show for a while. Tank their ratings. Make them know you're pissed.

Is it really a spoiler if it's not story-driven? If she's there one episode and then gone the next without explanation?

Also, everyone here who doesn't have a Nielsen box (which is everyone) should boycott the show to hurt its ratings! Rock on!

^ Technically no. The thread title doesn't say how she leaves. There should be a spoiler tag in the title though because of how the character leaves being in the post.

Just the fact that I know the character is gone from the show before it happens kind of sucks. It's not earth shattering or anything but I like surprises so I was disappointed when I saw it.

Don't read too much into it though because I also get annoyed when I see avatar's made of promotional images from movies. I'm very anti-spoiler, what can I say.

^ If you've seen Cast Away, Snake Eyes, Arlington Road, Ransom, Office Space or Double Jeopardy, check out their trailers for some major spoilers. If you haven't seen them, then avoid them.

Or how about the Star Trek III trailer?

James Earl Jones is guest starring and he's going to stick Dr. Hahn in carbonite and give her to Jabba the Hut.
